Kitchen arrangement *Post a picture!

When we moved into this house, we pretty much gutted it and redid everything. We completely removed everything in the kitchen and planned out the cupboards to fit what I wanted. Maybe that's why I am so particular with this kitchen. I had it designed specifically so that I could put certain things in certain places.

We had a house fire and did the same thing. Only I wasn't thinking about window/dishwasher placement ...

The hubby and I just had a major fight last week over this- he cleaned out my pantry and "cleaned up" my pantry while I was out. You can die for moving my stuff, and you will. He swears I don't know where anything is, I KNOW where everything is, and what I have. Don't move it. YOUR the one with spatial issues. UUUGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

My daughter redid the kitchen in their house before they moved in. It is a very small kitchen and they purchased a refrigerator that is tailor-made ... higher, not as wide, and with a pull out freezer on the bottom. Really nice. Only thing is they have the door opening the wrong way. The sink is on the right side, with a small butcher block table in front of it. The door opens from left to right, so you have to reach around to get to anything.

When they first moved in, I mentioned it and she said her 'academic professor' husband had considered it and determined this was the most effective way to have it. DUH? Well, it's her kitchen and I don't go there much, so be it. But every time I visit, I am so aware of how inconvenient it is to get anything out of the refrigerator ~ ! Sometimes we get so used to doing things a certain way, that even if it is more efficient another way, it can seem uncomfortable.

The bottom line is .. it's YOUR kitchen, and as long as it works, FOR YOU, who cares?

I got a gallery type kitchen as I posted pictures elsewhere in BYC.

Above stove cabinets would be the crockpots, waffle irons and souffle and angel food cake pans.
Upper cabinets next to stove would be the boxed items, mac and cheese, spices, cake boxes, spagettis, envelope seasoning packets, baking soda and powder, teabag containers. the cabinet above that one would be the "overflow" of spagetti, noodles and glasswares that I do not use once a year.
Above sink cabinets are the plates, glasses, RX box, aspirins, mixing and dinner bowls, soup bowls, and once in a while bags of chips make their home there LOL!
Upper cabinets right of sink would be the cereals, containers of flour, sugar, brown sugar, chips and bread loaves.
The stove bottom drawer would be my iron skillets and Saladware pots and pans.
The "next to stove" cabinets, three drawer, upper drawer would ahve the silverware and sharp cutting knives, odds and ends of kitchen items even an old pop opener and V tipped for opening juice metal cans (remember those???)
Middle cabinet, are my kitchen blenders, wooden spoons, all the good stuff of kitchen-dom that I need, sort of a catch-all!
Lower drawer, is the plastic bags, saran wraps, wax papers, brown paper bags, etc.
Under sink, garbage bags, plastic grocery bags in a big bag, Windex, pizza pans, flat cookie trays, three stone pizza plates, cool racks, muffin trays, a container of oil, and a container of Crisco. And a deep fat fryer.
Next to sink, right side, cabinets are all my canned goods. and one drawer full of hand towels and dish towels.
Above refigerator would be the mixing blenders, overflow of spices, more cake pans, waffle maker.

Anyone messes or re arranging my kitchen will get the boot from my foot! Hubby tried to re arrange my spice and boxed goods and man, I was ticked off because of the stuff I use alot, the vanilla, baking soda, powder, cornstarch, seasonings were on top shelf while all the boxed goods were on the bottom!

He thought it was the BEST arrangement FOR me. I told him if I need seasonings or packets, he better be on my beck and call to reach for the stuff on the second shelf!

My husband and I spend about the same amount of time in the kitchen, so I don't have to worry about him moving stuff around so much. When we moved to this house, the kitchen only had one side with cupboards (it's a long kitchen) and the other side was made for a table. The previous (and only other!) owner used to keep most of her food in the basement. That wasn't going to work well for us, so being my folks were remodeling their kitchen at the time, we got an 8 foot section of cupboards from them for free!

Anyway, all the foodstuff goes in the cupboards gained from my folks. Above the stove is all our table dishes like plates, glasses, etc. One side of that cupboard is given over to food storage containers for the fridge, mixing bowls, and casserole dishes. Above the sink(and right up to the ceiling) are things like water bottles, vases, etc. Then above the fridge is stuff like chips and crackers and the like. The few cupboards right next to the fridge hold the coffee cups, some more mixing bowls, and all my cook books. That's the upper part. Then down below, there's one cupboard with pots, then beneath the sink is all the cleaning supplies, and then the cupboard with the pans and the baking things like cake pans and cookie sheets. There's a random little cupboard next to the pans that we put all the cutting boards and trays into. The drawers over by the fridge hold the table silverware, the dishtowels, dishrags, and potholders, and then the bottom has stuff like garbage bags, food storage bags, and foil. There's another drawer above the frying pans that put the spatulas, mixing spoons and stuff like that in.

We needed more room in the kitchen for things like the mixer and the crock pot (I guess you would say small appliances) which we kept in the basement all the time when not in use. It was a pain to go down there every time you needed something, so my husband put up really nice deep shelves above the food cupboards for that stuff.

Most of the spices we use on a regular basis are on a section of counter that's about 6 inches wide between the wall and the stove. There is a little cupboard beneath it that we can put them in, but they're used so much that we just keep them out. There's a little drawer above that little cupboard that we put miscellaneous sharp knives in. Our dishwasher is under a window to the north side and is portable.

My mom came one time and did the dishes while I took care of my daughter. She put everything back where she thought it should go, and we're still having to go searching for a few things as we go along. My mother in law always has my husband or me put stuff away, because we know where it goes.

We're thinking in a few years (maybe five?) when things settle down for us financially, we're going to redo the kitchen and move the stove over to the middle of the section with the food cupboard and put in a dishwasher where the stove is at. That will be much nicer for us! And then all new cupboards and new flooring too. Not the green from the seventies! Yay!

Some of it depends on whether you are right or left-handed, I have discovered.

I am a lefty, so what is intuitive to me makes no sense to all the righties in the house.

What drives me nuts are little details: the measuring spoons are NEVER where I want them to be.

The other thing that makes me want to kill is when people use the same sponge for washing dishes and cleaning the sink and counters. NO NO NO!!!!! And PLEASE don't even stack the dish sponge on top of the sink/counter sponge!!! I color code them and everything but no one pays attention...

You do know that the side the door opens on is reversabile? look at the door & handles, they unscrew, and can be rescrewed in to open the oppisite way.

Oh, I absolutely know that. Suggested to my daughter. NO, they have determined (being college educated) that the way they have is better. So be it.

I have OCD. Someone starts re-arranging my kitchen and I'd need electro-shock therapy.

The good side of my kitchen is that it's absolutely huge. Bad side is that it was designed and built by tall people. My DH's dad was 6' 3", DH is 6'4" and they built it for DH's mom who was 5'11". I am now 5'4", having shrunk a few inches. Everything I need is just out of reach.
