Hi there... you have parakeets correct...? I have three males and three females.. well, I thought that they don’t breed unless you provide nest boxes for them..? Today I saw two of them mating... does this mean she’ll just lay eggs on the floor but not try to hatch them..?

I'm not sure. Generally they want a nest box. My brothers budgie would lay eggs on the platforms in her cage, but never tried to hatch them. She didn't have a mate. I personally never had any lay eggs without me bringing them into condition by feeding them sprouts or conditioning food that I can recall.

My guess is if they lay they won't set because it isn't safe on the ground for a budgie, but you never know.

Conditioning food contains more calories, and vitamins, and is designed to bring birds into breeding condition. A better diet can do that. If you think about it, budgies are from Australian. They breed when fresh seeds, and sprouts are available which will be more nutritious. They don't breed during the dry season.

This time of year too with increasing light will encourage breeding as well.

Make sure you provide calcium so females don't become eggbound. You don't need to let anyone hatch and raise unless you want to. Just remove the eggs.

Aaahh... okay.. duh! That’s right.. I knew that ... sometimes I can be a bit dingy... I guess I was just a little surprised to see them mating... now I’ll be collecting budgie eggs along with my chicken eggs... perhaps I’ll get a tiny pan and fry them up!

Although, now I’ll have the temptation to let them hatch ... I see nest boxes in my future.... oh no!

She is doing great! She is a fun little thing with loads of personality! I don’t remember the last time we had a kitten that loves to play this much.. Bobby and Pippin.. although they are young.. are content to sleep all day.. but she has actually got them up and running... thanks for asking!
