Kitty food...Really???

I get the Purina Startena Game Bird at $12.49 a bag 50#, thats not to bad for 30% protein. My chicks are doing great. Funny though, I wouldn't feed Purina to my dogs, so go figure.

we find it hard to get game bird feeds where we are, occasionally if we are caught out we use a mix of 1/3 purina kitten chow to 2/3 chicken layer pellets, crumbled to the same consistency, which gave the appropriate level of protein. It's too expensive to do for long though. We had a look at the bags of cat food and picked on the kitten chow because it had a high protein level and fairly low sodium. A lot of cat biscuits seem to have too much sodium for birds.

Gosh you bunch of silly quailbrains.. lol

I feed IMW (inter-mountain west) gamebird starter mash. It's practicly powdered food and it's 28% with probiotic yeast in it. Uhm, it's only 2 miles from my house which is awesome but it is also $18 a bag. So just the quail get it. I make the cats eat the cat food.

I wish my cat could eat game bird starter. I pay 33cents a pound for 30% protein GBS, and about $1 a pound for 30% protein cat food. Not to mention canned food, litter, vet bill, etc.

Does IMW have a web site?
I know the 2 major and 1 minor feed mills that make GBS. I have never heard of ImW, and google is all over the place on a search.

The highest protein poultry feed I can get here is only 22% so I mix in dog food for the buttons and coturnix chicks. Once they were adults I was only feeding my coturnix the 22% gamebird crumbles and getting eggs fine but I didn't test that long term though since I disliked that entire batch, butchered them all several months later, and haven't gotten more yet. The buttons do benefit a lot from the cat food or dog food. I can actually find dog food with higher protein (42%) for cheaper than the cat food. While cat food or dog food is not formulated for quail I don't think anyone is talking about feeding only cat food. Mixed in at 25% or more my buttons live several months longer and take much shorter breaks between laying. Otherwise my first few generations of hens burnt out within a few months and either stopped laying for 4months before starting again or most actually died. I have a lot more 2nd and 3rd season layers using up to 50% cat and dog food.

My bad memory shouldn't be trusted.. I got the label and it's IFA which means intermountain Farmers Association. It is manufactured in Salt Lake City. #50 lb bag 28% game bird starter mash with Bio-Mos code #39979. I researched Bio-Mos before I chose the feed because I had no idea what it was. It is a product of the Alltec Corporation which specializes in probiotics, bio-mos is a yeast they add to the food. I figured it was safe. What is you Quail folks opinion?
