If the kitten is over 8 weeks old a mother cat weens the kittens off and sends them away (most do) so you probably won't find the mummy cat near by. I wouldn't worry about the kitten at all she'll keep all the mice and other rodents away. Cats are great pets you don't have to much for them just feed em and they are happy( fleas are a pain for them though)

Oh and the egg, if she has just started laying they can be irradic in when they lay one of mine layed 3 days in row and then didn't lay for a week. I also have a bantam Langshan and she was our best little layer and she all of a sudden stopped laying and hasn't layed for about a month. I don't think the kitty is eating the eggs but you never know.

Good luck with your chickens and new kitty

I have 4 barn cats and there is a ferril cat that comes and goes, along w/ my house cat that goes out during the day. All walk in amongst the chickens and turkeys. None except my indoor cat have even looked at them. He quit looking at them when he was chased.

The chickens are comfortable, the cats are fine. I did worry when they were chicks. The spayed momma kitty was very interested when they were little, but their brooder box was predator proof. Now she runs from them.

No, she is not molting.
I live in North Carolina. This past week has been cooler than usual.

The others are not yet ready to lay. I will keep an eye on them and see.
Looks like I will have to update the profile to add a cat.
Thanks for all your help.

We have a feral barn cat that hangs out with our free range chickens as if they are friends. We put an igloo type shelter on our porch for him to use in the winter and one of our hens lays eggs in it. He will catch rodents but has never harmed a chicken.

There was another post on here with someone with a kitty in their run too and they just left her there with some kitty food and she was fine.

It isn't unusual to see barn cats and our chickens napping in the sunlight together.........

For some reason, unless its a rather large nasty cat, they dont mess with the chickens much. Till your girls get used to him it might throw them off lay for a little bit, but I wouldn't worry. If he's bout 8 weeks or so now then hes too small to think of them as prey and will adopt as family!!!!!

Personally, I think you've just found yourself a new livestock guardian animal

So let me ask one more question about this kitty. I have some new chicks (4 weeks old) that are about ready to go to the chicken barn. Do you think it will mess with them?

I have yet to see any of my eggs missing from my cats - I don't think c ats eat them, they would have a heck of a time breaking the shell, and really coulnd't. They do keep lots of mice away - I have four outdoor cats and never have they been bad around the chickens
I would enjoy it, it is going to keep you mice free

this is a domestic animal(feral or not) and if i were hungry i would eat your eggs too(probably your chicks too). the most important thing is to neuter this obviously unloved domestic animal or you may eventually have many many cats. my ferals(neutered) are excellent hunters and don't say boo to the chickens(of course they've not had access to chicks so I would be very cautious there) if kitten can't be caught by hand a trap with food(outside chicken area or you'll trap all chickens first!) does the job. there is ALWAYS someone willing to neuter inexpensively (a feral even) if you do some looking. its the CORRECT thing to do. feed, neuter and there will be joy. good luck.
