Knowing when to intervene

Just completed my first hatch and currently have 2 little chicks! Both hatched on day 21 as expected but another did a very small pip on day 22 and rolled around pretty furiously throughout the day but on day 23 there was nothing. I decided to help out a little or at least investigate and surely enough the chick was dead. If there is a lot of rolling but no progress is the sign that I should intervene? Or is it a case of it being a few days late and this was probably always going to be the case?
