do i still need predator-proofing ? (for a rooftop)

im still in the thinking process. but I was thinking. basically it'll be like an coop + run . then the rooftop will be closed from all sides. or just. A very large run. where I also bring them grass and enrichment. I'm assuming chickens cant just be let “grazing” around in our local park as catching them would be impossible even though we're thinking of hand taming them ? I'm not sure what EPDM or bitumen is. ill look into it. thanks
Roofing to make the house waterproof.

Yes, you really need more thinking ahead. And other important matters; How many chickens do you have in mind? How is your climate? Where do you live?
How much space do you have on the roof?
Is there a possibility to make a coop + run in the park?
Realise how much work it is every day/every week , year in year out for maintenance. Strong chickens can live up to approximately 15 years. Laying hybrids up to 8.

How do you protect the chickens from too much sun? What happens in a storm? Is the roof strong enough to attach a construction? Put a lot of sand on top?

Maybe it’s best to read some articles on housing (coop and run) on BYC and watch a few videos on Youtube and make a more solid plan (or skip the plan and search/volunteer on children’s farm or an allotment with chickens where they can use s few extra hands).

LOL

welcome mouse GIF

so galvanized steel predator proofing either way. thanks.

* 3 at least since it's reccomended as they're flock animals.
* see image
* i doubt anyone here knows about my province in turkey - but if you mean it building wise. an apartment.
↑ also who do we ask about our urban farm animals laws ? there is no information on it on the internet. the only thing I found is from another city (that has nothing to do with my Province)
* haven't measured it yet
* hm. I don't know if I can trust a coop to be there
I thought about those moving tractors or something we can carry the chickens with to the park so they can forage on the grass park (ofc with permission if it's something we can do)
how about we attach something like an harness + long leash to them so that we can catch them easily of course with harness training
* with shade ? or other ways of cooling them down. even taking them inside.
* during a strong storm well take them inside. or they'll have an strong coop they can go inside on.
* how do we realize how strong our roof is ? like who do we ask
* yeah. these stuff I said are before I read articles on housing etc. I just felt like answering right now instead of making you wait on hold.

should i be caring about predators if the chickens will be located on a rooftop of an closed building
Are people allowed to go on the rooftop and do things there?

Some buildings have flat roofs, and the roof is usable space (helicopter pad of a hospital, swimming pool of a hotel, place with benches and potted plants where apartment dwellers can spend time, something like that.) It might be fine to have a chicken coop on a roof like that.

Many buildings have sloped roofs, and people only go on the roof if they need to fix the roof. Some buildings have flat roofs but people are still supposed to stay off unless they are fixing the roof or otherwise have good reason to be on it. You would not be able to keep chickens on roofs like those.

* how do we realize how strong our roof is ? like who do we ask
You could start by looking at what else is allowed on the roof. You could see if people are allowed to keep personal things on the roof (someone's garden, or beehives, or their personal chairs and table, would be good signs that people are allowed to use the roof in this way.)

If you have a lease, read that to see what it says.

If there is a manager of the building, ask them. If you don't think there is a manager, think about who you would talk to if something broke in your apartment, or if something broke in a common area (elevator or stairs or main entrance door to the building), because they might also be the right person to ask about this.

it's controversial. and im starting to think it might be unethical for the chickens. so yeah (it's put aside at least)
I think that’s wise. On a roof, would there be a way to put something like dirt and mulch down in a run so they could have a surface that approximates living on the ground? Do you have enough room up there?

* striped hyena

* hogs
* red fox
* Grey Snake and Viper Species
* long eared hedgehog
* (yellow?) Scorpion
This list had me googling the native ranges of the animals, but I see you later said you’re in Turkey. Only the climbers should be an issue on a roof - monitors, scorpions, and possibly snakes. Also, I’m assuming you have rats, since they seem to be all over the world? And then whatever birds of prey you might have. All that to say it sounds like you won’t need to have heavy-duty defenses against large carnivores on a roof, and the more important thing would be small-opening wire to exclude the smaller predators.

I don't see why not,,, and I'm pretty sure we do have space like. not sure on the exact measurements though !

someone once said “ you will def want to figure out how to keep them weather-proofed up there. the roof surface is made to reflect heat and keep it out of the building which is going to *bake* your chickens if you aren't careful”

and now I have more questions. I'm not sure if I should make a new post or update this one ? I'm gonna ask real quick.

actually I think I'm gonna figure out if it's allowed in the first place then make a new post but while waiting should I still ask my questions etc (and research to see)
