i give baking soda free choice. I am sooo scared of bloat! Thank god she is better

Just some comments from an OLD goat lady.

Do not withhold water unless you find the goat in the act of gorging on grain. If you withold water for a few hours then and fill the goat up on dry hay, you can usually prevent acidosis.

Goats should be current on shots for enterotoxemia (Clostridium perfingens). Entero strikes without warning, often for no good reason, and it is deadly. Goat owners should keep some entero antitoxin on hand because when you need it you need it NOW!!

GasX is better than oil for bloat. It works very fast and it is much safer. If you get any oil in the lungs you will have a dead goat within a week.

I would give this goat some penicillin in case it has a mild case of entero. (If it had a severe one it would be dead by now). Penicillin is effective against clostridial organisms. Entero can cause bloat, but sometimes bloat just happens.

I have to admit, I was extremely worried about her aspirating oil into her lungs, I was scared. I toyed with the idea of giving some infant gas drops, which I have given to rabbits in GI stasis but I didn't know if I could have so I didn't and went with the oil.

Most injections for goats can be given subcutaneous rather than in the muscle. That includes penicillin. In fact I have been told by vets who are experts in goat medicine to avoid IM shots in goats.

Yep Wen, I just saved my French Angora bucks life a couple of weeks ago when he went into stasis which was then followed by slight wool block. I gave one dropper full of gas drops and then massaged the abdomen as deeply as he would allow me to in a circular motion until he started passing gas, and then poo. He is rough shape and thankfully I had the things I needed on hand.

Free choice baking soda???? I have never had goats before but we are considering getting a Nigerian doe and buck. Please send some advice and/or information my way! We wanted to get a pair for the kids in 4h for next year. The does is 2yrs and has never been bred. Can she still be or is she considered 'too old'?
