I've heard the same on Aquarium forums.One fish per 1000 gallons is a bit extreme. I have heard 10 gallons per inch of fish, so in other words 250 gallons for a 25 inch fish.
Thats an interesting idea...how did you come across it? Accidentally drop oranges in it?I have huge Koi in a huge pond with constant running water with proper filtration and UV lamp - one way to get them to breed if you buy more than one, is to throw cut oranges in the pond, for some reason this does the trick. Mine multiply like rabbits!!
The pond needs constant attention as the filter basket gets clogged regularly with my nightmare string algea, and you have to back wash, rinse fill up and add chemicals to prevent chlorine build up so its quite a mission to look after them properly.
