Do the space requirements apply to low-quality, non-breeding koi as well?

Yep, koi are messy fish! Bigger is definitely better. It doesn't seem like it with a tank indoors, but 250 gallons is a teeny tiny space when talking about a pond for large fish! Don't forget, these fish wont breed if they are too cramped and the off spring constantly need to be removed to allow the other fish to continue growing and breeding. It's not easy catching koi, even large ones, in a big pond! Oxygenation and filtration is also extremely important.

I have huge Koi in a huge pond with constant running water with proper filtration and UV lamp - one way to get them to breed if you buy more than one, is to throw cut oranges in the pond, for some reason this does the trick. Mine multiply like rabbits!!

The pond needs constant attention as the filter basket gets clogged regularly with my nightmare string algea, and you have to back wash, rinse fill up and add chemicals to prevent chlorine build up so its quite a mission to look after them properly.

Thats an interesting idea...how did you come across it? Accidentally drop oranges in it?

No boring, the breeder told me. Will get a pic of fish later but they have gone to ground, as it were, for the winter

Koi pic - impossible to get pic had to wade in a chase them from the deep end - hope you appreciate the mind numbing cold I went thru

Thanks for the pictures! How big is your pond?

About 10.000 litres its natural rock which we built a wall round, very deep at one end then tapers in to a shallow end, where the outlet pipe sits so we can get to clean it. Maybe thats why they breed because of the depth not sure....
