Hellos folks.

My first post here but I have been reading on this board the last few weeks as I have decided to try raising a few laying hens.

I've been doing a lot of research on coop & run design, including automatic door openers. I wondered if anyone on this board has heard of, or had any experience with, "Ladies First Chicken Door" ? From the email exchange I had with the company it sounds like they are brand new on the market..., but I'm not sure???

At any rate, this automatic door opener looks like the best design I have seen so far. It looked as though it will work for both vertical and horizontally sliding doors???

If any of you know anything about this unit please share your knowledge. Thanks.

I'll make the first reply to my own thread.

I've had several email exchanges with Matt at 'Ladies First Chicken Door' and have learned the official launch of this new automatic coop door is in the next week or two. Having learned that, I'm sure no one has any experience with the product yet.

Just so ya know, this is not a 'spam' thread. I'm just a soon-to-be rookie chicken owner doing research and found this interesting new product and thought you folks here on BYC might like to hear about it.

On another note..., anyone on here from La Pine, OR (Central Oregon)?

Welcome to the BYC flock! It is good to have you here.

I have no experience with automatic pop door openers so I can't help you there. Sorry!

Good luck with starting your adventure in chickens. Are you getting chicks, juveniles, or adults? Do you know what breed(s) you plan to get and where you plan to get them from?

I have held off buying an auto door closer because of the price. There are a few already on the market that I think look good. This one costs even more than they do. I'm going to hold off longer.

ETA: Oh, by the way,

Thinking only 3-4 birds to start with. Was thinking older pullets just to get egg layers going quicker. Probably Barred Rock, or maybe a mix of BR's & Rhode Island's???

Any advice about first birds, or breeds for Central Oregon area? Thanks.

I suggest heading over to this site and using their chicken breed selector to find the breeds that might be best for you.

From there you can also research each breed.

I have had both ER and RIRs. The hens were great but both roos were aggressive so they had to go.

I love variety both in my birds and in egg color. So we have quite the assortment. Just get what makes you happy!

We started with adult birds as well, just to make sure chickens were something that we wanted to stick with. Then we moved to a few rounds of purchasing chicks. Then a few hens went broody so we did a few clutches of our own. Now I keep working out ways to get more and more and hope to be breeding and hatching more eggs in the near future. So, going that route has worked well for us. Just do your research and make sure your coop/run is entirely predator proof. We lost almost all of our original birds to a coon in one night when it dug under the coop door.

Good luck!

All good advice, Thanks!

Our new home/property is right up against National Forest Lands so I am expecting interest from predators!

My coop will have to incorporate an auto-door as my first love is trout fishing and I am often away from the house before sunrise, and, or sometimes not home until after dark.

I'm pretty excited about this chicken raising venture and can't wait to get started, though completion of the project is months away!

It is an exciting adventure. When my hubby first suggested we get chickens, all I could do was roll my eyes. I thought he had lost it. Now I am the one obsessed with them and always wanting more. My, how things change!

I love getting to know each of their personalities and having them come running when I come out to the coop expecting treats. I hope you get everything together soon so you can start enjoying your chickens!
