With the upmost respect, I have to disagree with you on two points. First, it is extremely important that people are factual and tell the truth in this forum. Lives count on it. Second, I would really like to read the Reader's Digest article. I'm not questioning his honesty. I like Guru. I find his posts refreshing and usually very informative.

I wish I was that lucky!!

I do agree that it is important to tell the truth "when lives depend on it" but in this particular case no lives were hanging in the balance (they were already saved) so it really didn't matter whether it was truth or not in my opinion. I can respect what you are saying though. As for the article, I saw no issues with you inquiring about it at all. I am sorry if I came across in a hateful way but it just bothers me so much when people automatically assume the worst in people. I like to take people for their word and not go out of my way to find fault in them. I am not accusing you of anything or even remotely suggesting anything at all but rather just clarifying the way I feel.

I have to agree with Ziggy and this is my reason why. People come to BYC to ask questions and answers to problems. When a person claims much experience and really doesn't know or can only quote word for word from a book it's often the wrong advice and results in people loosing birds. That to me is very important and helps people have a good experience with the turkeys and BYC as a whole. Thats the whole reason I joined BYC years ago was to learn and try to help when I could. In the era of everybody wearing their heart on their sleave now and getting upset at everything written I don't post very much.

I never said anything about giving advice nor was the original poster asking a question. My issue was with this particular situation in which the poster was just sharing their excitement and the way people treat others. I suppose I should be on my way. I did agree that people should tell the truth here especially when giving advice. I just think that it was rather sad that people just decided that this story was a big fat lie and demanded proof. It does not seem realistic that a hatchery would send me an EXTRA 112 birds either but they did.

Turkey Guru ~ I am very sorry that people doubted what you were saying.

I live in washington state shelton, I raise and hatch 8 breeds of heritage poults! this is my 10 th year on turkeys, I have raised birds all my life I'am 54 years old, I have 4 breeds of the plymouth rocks! I take orders on the phone for straight run chicks and poults! I take about 5 calls a day on orders and information! I travel and sell at 3 auctions and 2 swap meets, I will hatch about 1500/2000 poults this year, I hope, I would like to keep about 200 poults, but I don't think theres enough grass in that pasture maybe 150 would work! the guru only deals in facts ,honesty, I help those with turkey problems and they help me, we promote the hertige breeds! a labor of love!!! I don't sell at the auction ( not enough +30%) but I will buy poults and young adult hens tom!!

I know that Tom the Turkey Guru is no longer on here, but I felt I needed to throw in some defense. Tom is a farmer, as such he sees his birds differently as many of us on the boards. He sees them as food and a source of income and not as his backyard "pet". He does raise ALOT of turkeys each year and sells them up and down the Pacific Northwest area. He has been a "mentor" of sorts to me hatching chicken eggs. I have learned alot of great information from him and appreciate his no nonsense take on poultry. I have learned to respect old timers in the poultry business as there knowledge goes beyond the book. Is it always 100% correct? No, but neither are how-to books.

I purchase 10 dozen heritage eggs from him every 3 weeks that i incubate and get EXCELLENT hatch rates from. He has pointed me in the right direction to find my incubator (a gqf), setting it up to get the best harch rate possible, and on selling and raising chicks. He has given me alot of excellent advice on selecting a quality birds while on the auction scene. Tom does know his stuff, he just sometimes rubs people the wrong way.

Just asking people on these boards to keep a little more of an open mind when new people come on board, especially old timers who are just figuring out the computer and internet thing.

While I agree that he likely has good information, and a lot of experience, I had a problem with the way he 'spoke' to people. "Kiss My what?!?" and other comments that I found insulting/inappropriate. Even 'old timers' should use proper courtesy when dealing with others, and we should all remember to be polite, even if others say things that believe to be wrong.

Sorry, I have no idea what went on in the different threads. I was just defending his knowledge, not his tact.

Personally, I think turkeys are smelly and I have none, by choice. I have a BLRW auction to go shark. Happy hatching to all, whether poults or chicks.

I found this thread because I was trying to find Tom's number, when I want turkeys, he is the guy to call. He has the best turkeys, nice nice guy, he will spend time and energy to help you get set up with the RIGHT turkeys. He does not judge if you want to eat them, raise them for fly feathers, or raise them as backyard pets. He will help you find the right birds for your flock, and he has hundreds of well kept, healthy nice birds. Great person, great birds.
This thread annoys me that people are being so catty to Tom. You guys better be nice or good folks who know more about turkeys than most might decide its not worth the drama and hassle to spend time answering questions and helping newbies out.
