I say just stick to chick starter for the first few weeks nO bugs. They need grit if they are getting anything other than chick starter.

Is it safe for chicks to eat sand and small rocks? I let mine out and it tried to eat a rock so I grabbed it and was scared it might kill it so and ideas.

Chickens need sand , gravel and smal rocks for proper digestion.
