Laguna Beach, CA urban coop

I wish I could say I built this myself but the reality is I have no tools at my aunts house while I'm finishing up college. The only things she has are hand screw drivers and some hardware for art. I only have my car tools here and they're no good for wood working.

This couple in Temecula, about an hours drive from here built it for me. I found the couple on craigslist and the wife, Crystal, builds all of them. She is quite a skilled builder and you should have seen us abusing this thing to get it in the backyard. We had to drag the coop up a 30 or so foot hill and hoist it over a fence to get it in the backyard. Anyways here is a shameless plug for them. The coop really exceeded my expectatations.

Nice coop, neat and efficient

I agree you need more ventilation, the dark roof with no insulation will draw a lot of heat but since they can get out easily, it should not be a big issue except maybe in the evenings. In your part of the world, it's easy to create a stuffy area

I would also suggest a lip around the exit hole about twice as tall as your your litter is deep to keep the mess down. A couple large lawnmower wheels on the back would make moving that around much easier and save your nice yard.

I think this coop is great for two hens if they get to run around your yard during the day. Most coops I see have too much indoor space and a tiny run that I would not want to keep chickens in during the day. (Mine included). They really don't need much room to sleep. It just needs to be high and safe and dry and roosts at the same height so they don't fight over the best spot. I found I needed to build a run because I wanted the girls to have more space than the small run under their ark but having them free range through the whole yard every day was not working because they were eating my garden and pooping everywhere, especially on the porches. I don't know Laguna beach but if it is on the water, I bet you get marine layer at night and in the early morning and they won't be too hot when they are sleeping. Good luck!
