Lakewood nj laws on owning chickens?

You see and hear chickens all over the place in Lakewood. So my boyfriend and his son brought some home this past summer. Mind you its now February and we are now getting a fine. I didn't think to look into the laws because a bunch of neighbors have them. I thought it would be ok but i was so wrong. I can't find anything online about it was going for some help as i wait to talk to the township.
