Mali was surprised by another convulsion and a timber pup climbed out, very still. Mali licked him and licked him. He let out a weak, shrill cry. He barely moved. He was smaller than the others, weaker. He nursed, but moved slowly.

Daru nodded "I will leave you care for them, if you need me just call. I will be close." She left the den, her bulging stomach showing.

Mali licked every one of her pups and named them. The oldest, Leader. The second oldest, Runner. The third, Howler. The runt, was Spirit.
