lamb overdosed on ivermectin

Just wanted to add...

You must start deworming kids and lambs at one month of age and then should deworm them monthly for the first year. It was NOT out of the ordinary for them to have dewormed him. Just a friendly FYI for those of you taken aback by his age.

Question what is the proper dosage so no one else does this by mistake and gives too much? (LIKE ME!)

I really have to agree please look at the web site I posted there is so many things, sounds as if they tryed ivermec and it was not at all the problem sounds as if they waited to long and are blaming on the iverec,
Also re read your post if the eyes are rolling back and he is having the shakes he is having seizures.

I agree, you are so right. The owners were going to kill it so my neighbor took it home. If he was starving could it explain everything? On hand I have some robotic power and some B 12 shots with some gentamicin in it

eta: Ok, DH is bringing home a shot of B-12, how much do I give him?

Yes it could. I do wish you luck said a little prayer at lunch time with the kids. Good luck please keep us posted!

The adult dosage for B Complex is 3 cc...so I'd do about half that. You CANNOT overdose vitamin B...it is water soluble and what isn't needed exits via urine.

For those curious about correct dosage for ivermec (pour on)

1 cc per 22 lbs orally or topically

Smart shot B12 0.5-1ml is what I found might want to look into it more have not had to use on lambs also found this and though most will not be useful in this situation it has alot of info. Even read something about arching back, if this is it it doesnt sound good so please let use know the out come I do so want it it be a good one!

Can you get some warm lactated ringers into him? That would help with the dehydration and give him a bit of sugar for some pep. If he wasnt eating off mom he wasnt getting any source of water which would cause major havoc and start shutting things down pretty fast. I doubt the de-wormer did any good but with a proper dose it would have hurt anything.

If the mother cared for it at first but wouldnt care for it any longer there may be somthing else wrong with the lamb that she sensed....

I hope the little guy pulls through though, very cute baby!

Ivermectin toxicity is usually self-resolving within 24hrs unless there is liver failure from a tremendous dose. If that is the case the animal will die, there is nothing to do. Some vets are using a new protocol to treat demodex with large amounts of ivermectin over a 4day period. If the dog reaches toxicity, the symptoms self resolve within a day in most cases. But they watch for that and give small amounts that increase during the treatment.

If the lamb was overdosed, it would have taken a large amount especially in the topical dose. That wouldn't be my first guess to the problem unless he was extremely ataxic before he went down.

Many people worm as a preventative. The issue with worming without worms is that the poison then goes to the animal and not to the worms. The worms have to be present so that the animal does not get an overdose.

I would continue what you are doing and pray for a joyous outcome!

Chris
