Does anyone here know anyone who has these birds? I have read they are thought to be extinct but then again (and i read this on the ALBS's website) there are reports of one or two flocks but the owners aren't selling anything yet as to get their flocks bigger. Why wouldn't the owners of the flocks give some intrested breeders eggs or chicks to help bring this breed back? Any thoughts?

it doesnt make sense to me either why someone would be hiding a rare flock like that... but eh, you could always try to make your own, it's explained here .

Yeah i have thought of that but it probably wouldn't be the same and i read that it took 16 years to develop the breed! There are lamona bantams but from what i've read LF lamonas were great layers and good meat birds even after their laying prime.

Know a guy who used to have these and he did ship them all across the US.But haven't seen him recently maybe should give him a call. They did lay very well. Had some trouble finding new breeding stock don't know if this is why he got rid of them? I know I will see him in a couple weeks from now. Mike

The guy I know does post on here once in awhile. His name is Trost.

One would hope the reason is that the owners/breeders are restricting sales until they have the birds where they should be according to the standard and also production-wise. If any original Lamona stock exists, then it will be highly inbred and likely requiring select outcross(es) to save it from oblivion. OR possibly some breeders are attempting to recreate the Lamona entirely from scratch. Either way, it takes lots of time (many years) and more than a little luck to get it just right. The last thing a true preservationist wants to do is send out crossbred birds that don't breed true to type and/or lay the wrong color egg, to then be resold as purebreds. That would defeat the purpose entirely.

Be patient. Lamonas will probably be available before too long. I heard of some being shown at the Minnesota State Fair last year.

Oh i see. I read some where here on BYC that you can inbreed chickens as much as you want with out concequences like you would with people for example

Now dont quote me on this but the last I herd there is a APA judge or two in PA that has some and has been working with them for about 3 or 4 years now...
