Hello! I’m a new-ish chicken owner, I just got six chicks from tractor supply… They are all active and are spread around the brooder. But one of them seems to be panting a whole lot, but the others seem fine. What should I do? The heating lamp is a good 40 inches away from the brooder.

Please give me advice! I want to do the best for my chicks.

I have learned that is they are pushed up against the edges of the brooder it’s too hot and if they are all huddled under the heat lamp it’s too cold and if they just spread though then it’s good. Could you send a pic of the chick not sure I’ll be able to help tho.

This chick is against the upmost corner, but the others seem just fine!

Some chicks are more stressed by shipping than others. If you have Poultry Nutri-Drench on hand, I'd give it a couple of drops directly in the mouth (be careful, they can choke easily if you force them) or as a temporary substitute try some molasses mixed with water.

Hi and welcome to BYC! Have you seen this chick eat and drink? Have you checked its bottom for pasty butt? This is exactly what it sounds like, poop clogs the vent, the chick can't defecate, and if the problem is not resolved the chick can die. If the chick has this problem, take it to the bathroom sink, and gently and carefully remove the plug using your (gloved if possible) fingers and mildly warm running water. Try not to get the chick any wetter than you have to. If it's a really dried, hard clump, it can take some time, just keep wetting it with your fingers until it softens. If the chick gets pretty wet, gently towel it dry, and if necessary use a hair dryer to warm and dry it afterward. Keep the airflow rapidly moving and not too close so you don't burn the little tyke, then put it back in the brooder so it doesn't chill. Good luck!
