Very cute! You only have one? She needs a friend or two or three!
So you leave them in a dark coop longer into the morning? I don't put lights on mine at all but I do let them out within an hour of sunrise.Welcome to the thread BGMatt!
In reference to the question as to how I keep my birds from laying longer, I keep them in the dark. They are kept in a darker area for longer. I don't put lights on them until they get a bit older.
Cute chick! I know that we've had some discussion on feathering on the middle toe of Langshans. In fact, quite a few of the ones that I hatched last year had middle toe feathering as chicks. I would have to look at them all again but I'm pretty sure that they don't have it now as 8-9 month olds. If you are looking for LF blacks, Jim (mrheinz77) has nice birds. He's in Iowa and sells eggs but I'm not sure if he ships chicks. There is also a breeder in Arizona whose birds walked away with the top prizes at the Stockton Poultry Show this past January. Dirt Farmer has one of his roos. I am planning on contacting him to see if he sells eggs. I loved the tail spread on his birds!Went back and read everything, there's some beautiful birds in this thread! Thanks for the thread welcomes. PetRock I'm glad to hear that there's some Langshans on the west coast, after I get my Langshan pens built I will have to find some breeders that ship chicks or adults and get started again as I'd love to go back to all three colors in both sizes.
I may or may not be Langshan-less though. I've got 6 mystery chicks from a local 4-H auction (chicks came from Duane Urch) that were sold as White Langshan, but due to feathering on middle toe I'm going back and forth between Cochin and Langshan (the club's leader handles the breed ID, and he's fairly knowledgable, but can still make mistakes). I know they're large fowl and I think I have two males and four females since the two tower over everything else in the brooders at about a month old. I grabbed the biggest of them this morning and took some quick pics (he wouldn't stand all the way up to pose), I'll put those in this post and maybe y'all can let me know what you think as far as solving my Cochin/Langshan mystery? Ignore the flash reflection in the eyes on the second picture.
If they are Langshans has anyone seen adult stock from Urch? Is it decent quality or almost hatchery level? I know I could be patient and wait but where's the fun in that, I wanna know what I'm in for! haha

I'm not experienced enough to answer the question. Hopefully, Mikaela, Jim, or thorleif will be able to answer you. I do know that quite a few of my chicks had it if you look at the chick pics that I posted 2 or 3 pages ago. They are definitely Langshans and do not have feathering on their middle toes as adults.Does that mean you think the chick in those pictures is a white Langshan? Just checking. I'm hoping they are but the feathers on middle toe confuse me as back in the day the chicks would never have them on middle toe.
Edit: that's to both of you now since PetRock posted while I was writing my reply. LOL
