Langshan Thread!!!

Edit 2: I will look up those breeders, I prefer chicks because I've never shipped eggs, and incubators haven't even been turned on in 5 years since I've been out of poultry so I don't even know if they work, guess I could do a trial run with some eggs from something less important locally. Do y'all usually get pretty good hatch rates from shipped eggs?

I hatched quite a few last year but it was my first experience at hatching with borrowed incubators. They were shipped eggs and all were from at least 2,000 miles away. I'm not sure what the percentage was because I took over hatching them mid-incubation. This year will be my first year of having my own breeding stock and hatching my own eggs. My new incubator is supposed to arrive tomorrow!

How exciting! I still remember my first hatch (edit: of my own breedings) :) I need to break my incubators out of storage and make sure they're in working condition. I might have some bantams (sadly not Langshans) ready for a fall hatching season.

What kind of incubator did you get?

Edit: I went back and read your question and the response on the middle toe feathering, now I'm excited that these might actually be Langshans in this batch of chicks! Can't think of much poultry wise that would make me happier if they turn out (maybe blues or Blacks)

Does that mean you think the chick in those pictures is a white Langshan? Just checking. I'm hoping they are but the feathers on middle toe confuse me as back in the day the chicks would never have them on middle toe.

Edit: that's to both of you now since PetRock posted while I was writing my reply. LOL

I just finished a hatch with eggs shipped long distance (Florida to California). From one setting 2 of 5 hatched, from the second 8 of 16 hatched.
One of my Black Langshan chicks was found dead in the brooder this morning. No clue what happened. All the others seem fine. It was a week old and no signs of problems.

Is that hatched out of total? Or hatched out of fertile eggs? Sorry for so many questions, despite long years in poultry the shipping eggs thing is new idea to me.

I hope that it is a Langshan! I am really only interested in breeding BBS but ended up with a beautiful, big white cockerel and a not too bad white pullet. We named them Gandolf and Galadriel.

Yes, we are going to breed them because we ended up liking them so much. When we had Galadriel in with our backyard flock, she would entertain us by chasing the squirrels around the trees! And Gandolf developed an attachment for one of my tiny lavender Ameraucanas! It was funny to see the big stately guy courting tiny Giget! I miss them!

I really want a Brinsea cabinet incubator but finances only allowed me to buy a Genesis 1588 Hovabator!

I decided that when I move up and get a better one, I can use the small one as a hatcher. Just don't tell my husband what I have planned!

Yeah for the chicks! And so sorry about the loss of a chick. I've had that happen before. It is one of life's great mysteries, I guess! Do you know if the breeder in Arizona ships eggs? I would love to hatch eggs from his birds!

I don't know if he ships eggs. My impression he only dealt with started stock at shows. You can always email him; no harm in asking. If not, next year this time I hope to have some options. Maybe sooner if I can land some quality started pullets.

Shipping eggs can be quite successful if sender does it right. I use these boxes: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140592140237?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648 They are size medium, which will fit 58-65 grams eggs quite snug. We ship eggs all over Europe. If you suspect that the eggs will be x-rayed, buy a size bigger boxes, and wrap the eggs in aluminium foil. I know the people with the Rare Breeds
Ship eggs between UK and the US, but of course, regulations between countries must be followed. The authoroties are quite helpful, so talk to them if you want to try that. Time is quite essential here, of course, so, fresh eggs and a (expensive) good courier is needed. So, shipping eggs between states within the US must be pretty straightforward?
