Langshan Thread!!!

400

Fresh from the hatcher. Last hatch had a couple pasty bottoms so switched to sand and put the first bit of food on ground so that should help prevent that.

One of the hatchlings is not a Langshan though which is sad. Slightly smaller and clean legged, out of a brown egg and it is a blue bird so that will be a fun mystery.

Congratulations!! They look quite healthy so far!! (always watch those bantams, they're sneaky like that

No bantams here. The smaller chick with no feathers on its legs is a lavender Orpington apparently which disappoints me greatly. Oh well. 7 healthy Langshans. (They've eaten more in 2 hours in brooder than last weeks Plymouth Rock hatch did in 2 days.)

I got my first Langshan chick this year. She is 5 weeks old now and almost fully feathered. However, she seems to have really long legs (think the giant robot thingies in the opening scenes of "The Empire Strikes Back".), is more upright than I'm used to seeing my chicks be, and she already has a bigger comb than my chicks that are weeks older.

Is this normal for a Langshan pullet, or is Lilly likely a Billy?

I'll try to get a good pic of her today.

Crap, she's my daughter's pet, I really don't want to have to eat him/her. I'm sure someone will want a free really cool rooster. If he is well-behaved and doesn't wake the neighborhood at 2:00 am, maybe he can stay. Crossing my fingers. Maybe Lilly is just a tall, well-endowed girl.

OK, I got some pics. This is Lilly at 5 weeks. That's a 6-week old Americauna behind her. Is this normal appearance for a Langshan pullet? Or is Lilly probably a Billy?

That's what breeder said anyway, I've never heard of such a thing. Kids and their weird fad breeds these days. I don't go for the backyard non standard junk.

I guess I should be happy with the hatch rate but so few were viable I'm kin of soured on the egg shipping process. Will see how next two weeks go. I do have a pair of adult Whites coming from Joe Oakley next week so hopefully will be able to get some hatched out of that. That with the chicks will give me starts in all three varieties of Large Fowl. Gotta put the pressure on those weird fluffy Cochin things for the asiatic class in the shows ya know. LOL

Freia that chick looks like they're going to have nice lacing. I'd probably agree with Mrheinz about it being a cockerel though.

Happy Memorial Day y'all. Hope y'all are bbqing some good chicken tonight.
