Langshan Thread!!!

Darn it M! I let my subscription fall by the wayside. Darn! I love seeing the blues and whites win.I love my blacks but I'm a fan for the underdogs.

Thanks! I didn't know which birds to be more proud of! The largefowl for winning Asiatic or my white bantam pullet beating all of the other colors for Best of Breed!

That's great. I agree, you see Blacks hold their own at shows, but winning with Blues and Whites is rare. Now thats reward for all your hard work. (But I must admit I'm way too pleased with my pullet eggs.) I got a second one today, likely from a different bird. It was dull in finish and covered with tiny dark speckles, but laid in the nest. Its a keeper.

I'm like an old woman showing pictures of her grandchildren. Of my six pullets these two stand out to me as possible breeders in the spring. I have a cock and two cockerels to choose from. The cock is probably the nicest type but a bit pony sized. I guess I could mate him to the splash who is larger, and mate the best of the good sized cockerels to the black who is also a little small.

Those are some beautiful pullets. I'm drooling. As far as pairings, is the smaller cock bird and the smaller pullet at least within acceptable range of standard weight? If so then your plan sounds good. If not, use the bigger birds for breeding and keep the others as backups/showbirds/pets whatever.

I got out my hanging scale and killing cone this past weekend and weighed some of the birds I was most interested in. The cock was the only one that isn't up to size for his age. At almost 19 months he is at 8 1/16 pounds. I think that a few months ago he was 8 5/8 pounds and I was hoping he would just keep going. He's penned with the two cockerels and I wonder if its creating too much exercise. They aren't fighting but they are aware of each other and posturing. I may need to separate them.

You don't have to ask me twice when it comes to pictures. Neither myself or the neighbors dog have eaten. The second egg looked bigger but was 50 grams. Also a picture of the black pullet caught running full stride to get away from the camera, they hate it.
