Langshan Thread!!!

On this...if she has middle toe feathers (not one of my main concerns) and has a smaller body and poor comb, I wouldn't use her. If the other female has a slight cushion but larger overall size, better tail angle and lacks feathering in the middle toes, I'd use her. Alot of times, with larger size, that cushion starts to level out, especially with a longer backed bird.
All good stuff. I have been tossing this stuff in my head around and around. What about the monster pullet I posted above as a cushion example? I swear she is almost as big as the young roos and they are quite large...She is already at 5 months the biggest hen I have including bigger then my Import English Orp of the same age. Some of her tail feathers are missing or growing in on the side facing us in the picture. Had a tail picker at one time. You can't see in the picture, but she is very wide as well, would something like that go with the blue roo?

I honestly have no idea what line these langshan are that I have, except the 2 blue of the Beaufort line. I saw them, liked them, bought them and didn't ask about it at all. I guess they will be my line eventually, lol.

Is there a way you can get pics of all of your hens/possibilities? If you want to give your own pros and con's on each so others can see too? I'd be happy to take a look and see if I can help with a lineup? I always find it easier to compare which would be better with the males I'm keeping.

I have some pictures I can post of the original hens...The young ones are a bit tougher because I lose track of who is who and really should leg band them and write down my thoughts on them. I will order some leg bands, get them sorted and pics of each. I will make that a priority for the next month. I can always tell the huge one, but the others tend to run together.

These pictures are from when I first got them in March 2013 and they were 11 months old (supposedly). A current picture wouldn't be very helpful because they are molting.

Hen 1. Her tail is longer now and she often carries it a little higher than this so she has good tail angle, If you look close you will see her comb is twisted and uneven. She is small bodied, she has feathers on her middle toe. Her chest is rounded and I think nice. I think her head is ok, she has a nice amount of fluff, and she has no cushion. Concerned that she has wry tail though because she often carries it to the side, but then I turn around and it is straight again, but she holds it that way a lot. Wry tail is a little confusing though because the SOP says PERMANENTLY stuck to the side. Hers is not permanently stuck to the side. Her daughters/sons don't display the same type of wryish tail. At the APA show I went to some cards were marked wry tail and you could barely see it, but I guess their tails were a bit off center. Another was walking around with her tail held like this girl does then would straighten it, was not marked wry tail???

Hen two. She has also matured and her tail is taller than her head now. she has a cushion, and her back is short. When she struts and stands at attention she her tail is so erect that it is borderline squirrel tail or over 90 degrees. She is very bright eyed and perky and I like her face better than number 1. Concerned that I see that cushion bigger in her daughters. Her chest is super round now deep.

Seems like both had a few very decent babies with Gavin. They both have nice tail spreads with number two being spread the farthest. I think most of their offspring are better than either one of them.

For me, your best bird is Hen 1. Hen 2 has a cushion, a poor tail angle and poor feather width. I like the Wong carriage in #2 better than #1 but the overall better bird that exudes better quality is #1.

What about the wry tail question? If hen 1 is in fact wry tail, that pretty much nixes her for the future.

Oh! And the tail thing. If they can move the tail from a sideways position, it's called a "lazy tail." I had the same problem with one of my males. He would stand well on and off in the show hall but at the house it was always to the left. On the bright side, wry tail is easy to cull against. It's either there or it's not so get rid of any chicks that have an obvious problem with the tail unable to move.

Possibly, but they both lay their eggs in the same nest so I can only guess which baby is from which hen.

Here are two more pullets I haven't shown pics of. I think the one on the left is out of Hen 2 and the one on the right is out of Hen 1. I think the one on the right is really cute. She has a very pretty face. Her tail is missing a few feathers and makes it look a little pinched ( but the spread is there from the rear), the angle is there and she just looks like a nice bird to me. what do you think?

I believe this is the hen on the right from the rear.
