Langshan Thread!!!

Mikaela, I need to replace some spiral bands on my birds, too. They still have room to grow but not much. What kind of bands do you use and where is the best place to get them from?

LOL! I said the same thing when I hatched out the white one here!

You could have whites pop up later on down the line. They are recessive white, so they need to be homozygous for white in order to reproduce white. You can use the white to produce better blacks and whites in conformation, leg feathering or whatever it is that has you hooked! ;)

I used blacks to better my whites. They would have gone nowhere had I not used the blacks to get them a bit better. I have a black female that is so good, I thought she was from my entirely black lines. Now I can tell she has recessive white in her. She will be used with the white cockerel to reproduce, should I get lucky and the white male actually live to breeding age...
It's too bad that we live so far apart. This white cockerel from you is looking really good to me. He was strutting around the yard this morning with his tail up. He has a nice upside down bowler shaped body, a nice tail spread, and a shorter back than the other cockerels that I have. His tail spread isn't quite as wide as the black boys from Jim but he's still growing! Jim's birds have the nicest tail spread of any of the Langshans that I have hatched or raised.

I use wing bands. It never leaves the bird and I can keep exact notes on which bird is which if I need to.

If I must use leg bands, I use the plastic bandettes that have numbers. Those "can" come off, which is why I like them! :D

I think that I'll order some of the plastic ones this week. They will have outgrown the spiral ones before I know it.

The whites are like nicotin. VERY hard to get out of the system. @Mikaela: I had that magazine today, 5 pages about Croad Langshans. I am considering NOT to send you a photo-copy, so many nice photos, they will not be justified in B/W. I'll start reading tonight, and decide, maybe I should send you the whole magazine? Maybe. There are a couple of other articles in there that you MIGHT enjoy, I will proof-read it for you tonight, and then, MAYBE.

I guess that I'll have to decide whether it is worth it to keep his genetics in the pool or not. Or maybe I just need to keep a pen of white Langshans, too! I currently have 2 white cockerels and 1 pullet.

That's exciting that the article is 5 pages long! I would love to read it, too, if it makes it over here to the US.

Debi,

If you could PLEASE snag some pictures of that male..I know I would love to see how he stacks up!
We are in the middle of several waves of rain storms. If there is a break in the weather tomorrow, I'll try to take some pics. Then you can tell me if he is really as good looking as I think.
