Langshan Thread!!!

It is still raining out here in CA! Our ground is saturated and the rain is just running off. I sure wish that I would have set up a rainwater reclamation system before these storms started. We are supposed to have sunshine starting tomorrow. As soon as it dries up a bit, I'm going to get out there and take some new pics of my Langshans. Some of the pullets are looking really good!

Yay! I can't wait to see them!

I had a "dur" moment the other day while looking at my birds. This male, was hands down a white cockerel. No doubt about it. When he hatched, there was no eye-liner (dead give away).

Anyway, as I'm looking at him, I start seeing these blue feathers popping out everywhere! I'm thinking, this thing CAN'T be a splash! His mother was a splash and his father was a black!

Well, thanks to a friend calming me down, I had my "dur" moment. A white sport usually has black feathers popping up every now and then (because they originally came from black birds). Well, when I bred the black and splash together, that negated any black feathering. That made all the black feathers that would have shown up turn to blue!

talk about a *facepalm!*

I had one of those moments last week! One day I was looking out the back window at my wet backyard and was admiring my white cockerel standing there in the middle of the yard. (Remember when I commented on how much his tail has grown?) The next day, I was actually out in the yard and looked at him close up. His tail wasn't as long and he wasn't holding it as high as he had the day before. Then I realized that it was my white pullet that I had been previously admiring not the cockerel. Her comb and wattles are getting really red so she must be close to POL! My cockerel is looking good but his tail isn't quite filled out yet! I'll get some pics so you can see them!

I thought they were "dottes", and was wondering what they were doing her. Nice lacing on them, Welcome back when you grow up, and realise that PROPER chickens are the thing to have.

I have one SLW and she is pretty but mean to my bantam langshans. She even backs down the roosters. I think she is going to her grave a mean, old maid because none of the boys want anything to do with her!

I love the personalities of my langshans a whole lot more.

Where is everyone on this thread??? I know Joe is busy with the NYD hatch. Anyone else up to anything with their birds? I did set some eggs for the hatch. Cleaning coops today. First day in 5 days with no rain (hope I didn't just jinx myself).

I've been waiting for my backyard to dry up so I can take some new pics of my 20+ week olds. It looks like rain again today so their photo session is postponed, again. I had a neighbor's dog dig under my fence and terrorize my birds yesterday. The only one missing is our little flock mascot a white Polish named Marshmallow. Poor little thing! Of course, she is/was my daughter's favorite bird. I was hoping that she was just hiding out somewhere but there is not a sign of her this morning.
