Langshan Thread!!!

We got about an inch or 2 of snow yesterday. The Langshans had not seen snow yet (can't wait for 6+ inches to see what they do). When I let them out to free-range this morning they were unsure that they wanted to come out of the coop! LOL. A couple pics:

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

msladyhawke, just a quick thing you might want to do.

I have to go to work early tomorrow, so tonight I put Vaseline on my males' combs to keep them from frostbite. I did it as a precaution...never know if you can't get up to the barn for a few days and find out your birds lost their combs for showing.

I'm so excited for some snow! YAY!!!! The only birds I have on the ground outside are my Mille Fleur Cochin bantams. I got them as broodies...that way I'm not relying on my Langshans to brood. Even though they just LOVE to do it...

We dont laugh at crosses, well I dont anyway. 100 years ago RIR cock on Langshan hen was quite common in the egg-industry, as first generation laid quite well, and the cocks made decent meat in shorter time than it takes for a langshan to mature and get ready for slaughter. And that was two important things for the small farmers that made a living out of our hobby. But remember when you cross for eggs/meat: Strain is more important than breed.

Oh I can get a good chuckle out of mixing breeds. Some of them, you can get some WEIRD things happening! For example, could you imagine a naked neck Langshan? EEK!

As for a RIR x Langshan, why not? Will be a fun mix, but I wouldn't market them as something "unique" such as the "Royal Langshan."

That's good i wasn't sure if i was "wrecking" or "tarnishing the breed. I hope to see some lovely dark red or back with red strips and fluffy legged chicks running around soon. I think they will all just be back

though. I plan on keeping them not selling them so i wont be creating a "fancy new" breed.lol.

Hello fellow Langhsan fans... I have become a Langshan fan recently and took some eggs from a friend, they were due to hatch yesterday into today.... but.... still nothing. I candled just real quick and can see movement in 2 of 4. What is concerning me is I can't even see the beaks in the air pocket yet. I do have the hatch date right - I may be new to Langshans but not to hatching! Are Langshans known to be late?

The line I have likes to hatch later than my other breeds.
