Langshan Thread!!!

Wow, Mr Heinz, I've gotten successful guinea from you, successful Welsummers, and now quick answers! Nice! Thanks, I feel better now, I'll just put on my patient hat.

My standards hatch on Day 21-22. My bantams are 3 days early. Usually day 19. What could be is that you have some cool spots in your incubator that could be causing the hatch to be a slight bit delayed.

My eggs hadn't hatched by mid-day 23. I saw no more movement in 3 of them, so I egg-topsied them. They were dead and had never turned their beaks up to the air pocket and had small heads, I suspect because the eggs were pretty long and torpedo-shaped. The remaining egg (alive) had it's beak in the air pocket and was breathing. I waited over 24 hours, with nothing. I decided to see what would happen if I opened it's top - helped it pip. It lived, but is VERY VERY small! It's the teeniest chick I have ever hatched! I really didn't expect it to live, and at a few days old it still needs me to dip it's beak in water. I borrowed a 4 day old chick from a friend to be its pal. The 4 day old Polish chick is about 3x it's size! It's eyes seem a little funny to me, but it isn't blind. Everyday it gets a little stronger. Right now, it's probably about where it should have been (strength wise) at birth. I was really hoping to hatch a mammoth Langshan rooster, but I have a feeling I have a little runt on my hands! I'm sure I shouldn't have helped it out, I'm sure you will all tell me I should have let it be, but I didn't, and here we are, time will tell...

Woke up to these 3 bantam langshans hatched and looking around:

Are Langshan chicks particularly small and slow growing? I hatched just one chick, and the hatch didn't go well. This chick is over a week old, and BARELY his feathers are growing in at the end of the wings. I've never had chicks develop so slowly. He also isn't growing a whole lot, but is perfectly healthy and active, eating and drinking like a normal chick now. Although, his legs are way longer than other chicks! Can I expect him to grow into the really HUGE chicken his parents were, or is a small chick going to be a small adult? THANKS! I really do appreciate your time.
