Langshan Thread!!!

Rodriguezpoultry, I went to a poultry show in Inverness Florida today , and looked at all the Langshan roos, and because of the small amount of knowledge I've remembered from your posts, I actually picked the 1st place bird! He was the only one that had a back like a Martini (?) glass V. The others either had a flattish back, or the V too far forward and flattish behind it.

I couldn't even guess at any other breed, LOL

Are they on the American EBay as well?

We can buy them from the UK seller but it is over $21 with shipping. I think that I'll just admire them but not buy one.

I was saved on day 23. Look what popped out. The egg marked from the BBS pen hatched the very yellow chick. I don't have experience with Blues but looks like a Splash for sure. The other is from the unmarked egg. It is more grey than black so I'm thinking it is a Blue. (Any opinions?) Interestly enough I set a Rock egg 3 days after these guys, and it hatched on schedule. I thought maybe my temp was too low. The Rock had the advantage of going from henhouse to incubator, minus the 3000 mile shipping. I'm really mostly interested in Blacks, so sorry the three Langshan eggs marked from the Black pen didn't hatch (today is day 24, hope is fading). The darker chick may still turn out to be a Black.

I called and talked to the lady selling them, and she said she got her line from Ohio from Feather Hill Poultry.

I agree! Langshans rock!!!

I love having an eclectic laying flock but the Langshans are my favorites! I can hardly wait to hatch chicks this summer!

I've got the chance to obtain some pure Forrest Beauford Black Langshans, not sure I need another breed but......

That's quite a find. The key of course is whether or not the current breeder has been able to maintain the line at its former glory.

I now have a Langshan flock.

What a difference in these chicks one week apart. The setting of eggs from Pagdett's Exhibition Poultry hatched 6 chicks on day 23, 1 on day 24 (today), and one is still struggling. Not bad for shipped eggs. (That one bare leg belongs to a Barred Plymouth Rock.) These are all Blacks. The initial two appear more clearly to be a blue and a splash.

I weighed my cockerel at age 10 months. He is exactly 8 lbs. I don't know if that's good, bad or indifferent with regard to size. The only other cockerel I have is a 9 month Barred Plymouth Rock who came in at 8 lbs 12 oz. He is from a line known for being of higher than standard weight. Side by side the Rock is wider but the Langshan appears to have more frame to fill in. I suspect the Langshans on the whole are slower developing.
