Langshan Thread!!!

Dirt Farmer, I just contacted the breeder who you got your roo from! I'm so excited!

He does ship eggs and I'm going to order some from him as soon as his hens up their laying. He has been breeding them for 40 years and started with Murray McMurray and Takahasi blood and one male from Tommy Stanley 35 yrs. ago.
That's good news. Wish I had thought of that. I'm closing my flock after my last two orders arrive for this spring (Brahmas). I'll have to make due with what I have for a while, unless I'm totally disappointed with what grows out. He told me about the MM starting stock, but added that back in the day they frequently purchased breeders from top exhibitors. Can't do that anymore with the regulations that hatcheries have on them for biosecurity. I'm glad for you.

What is the consensus on McMurray Hatchery's stock of Langshan? i think i have seen it mentioned a few times in this thread and was curious as to "how far off" they are. I know us here in the US are really working back toward the true standard, so how far is McMurray from where we are here in the states?

I saw some adults from there in a backyard flock last year (they were selling Langshans on Craigslist who wouldn't have looked?). And they were pretty small and very pinched tails. Type wasn't a nightmare although the break at the tail was pretty sharp rather than smooth, due to long backs. I'd imagine it would take about 4-5 generations to fix them, maybe more, maybe less depending on your luck.

i think i am going to go in on an order with someone nearby and was just curious! i think they will be a fun project to start with and then i can introduce better lines later on! i told her to pencil me down for 6 plus whatever she is wanting and i will cross my fingers that i can get 2 trios out of the deal since she doesnt want any roos. Cant wait to join in on all the fabulous work you all are doing with this breed!

My first Langshan was a blue from Privet Hatchery. I loved that bird! She was the beginning of my Langshan love! She of course wasn't show quality but Mikaela thought that she would be okay to include in a breeding program. Unfortunately, she went broody and didn't back down when my young cattle dog wanted to play.

Here are some pics of her so you can see some of the problems with hatchery stock. Her size was not bad (she was almost as big as my Brahma) but her tail was pinched and the angle was not high enough. I did like her lacing, though. I miss that bird!

The breeder that I am going to get eggs from started with birds from McMurray but that was 40 years ago. I have no idea what their stock is like now.

Hi
I would like to get the date and lication for the Delmarva show...Thanks....Nick
Nick, The show is going on this weekend. If you want to try and see some birds you would need to get there by 9am on Sunday (tomorrow) I would think. The show ran all day long today, but probably will only last until noon tomorrow, maybe. Sunday is pretty much a wind down day. After awards, people pretty much coop out their birds and go. It is being held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, DE. The physical address is: 18500 S. Dupont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952. Hope you can make it.
