Langshan Thread!!!

I was going to catch him for a weigh since he is approaching one year old. I'll see if he'll stand still in my photo cube for a couple snapshots.

I hope that he cooperates!

He didn't but I got some photos, just not the ones I was hoping to get. I also took a snapshot of a blue and a splash hatched 7 weeks ago from some eggs I bought on Ebay. I've never raised a Langshan chick but I kind of like what I see, especially the blue.
By the way, Lincoln weighed in at 8 lbs.

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing these with us! I love Langshan chicks! My first one had such a quirky personality! When she was in the brooder, she would pick up pine shavings, dunk them in the waterer, and then eat them. I worried about her but she survived and thrived!

I also respect their great history. They have been a distinct breed for several millenia. If they die out we can not replace them by breeding and recrossing other breeds. they are a foundation breed that cannot be replaced. Thank goodness there is a surge of interest in conserving them.

I like the term foundation breed! How many modern breeds have Langshan genetics in their make up? I've heard that Jersey Giants and Australorps do.

Hello all. So glad to see the thread has kept up! Sorry I've been away so long. My computer decided that it didn't know what a processing system was...so I have been trying to use my phone. When I do, it decides that BYC isn't compatible and won't post. So...I just took my hubbies Mac! ;)

I hope to be able to keep up a bit more now that I have access to his computer. I'm working full time so it'll be a bit sporadic, but hopefully not near the amount of absence it's been before.

Dirt Farmer, loving that cockerel you have!
msladyhawke, way to go on your recent show!
PetRock, Gandolf does have a bit of a large comb and wattle, but for some reason most of the whites seem to have the same problem? Would you believe that his comb is actually about 2/3 the size of the original white male that I had? LOVE the blue pullet of course! ;) The black cockerel, I'm not really a fan of his tail width right now but it could just be the photos. If you can find some BOSS (can be kind of expensive) or some Catfish food, it should help keep up the quality of the feathers or at least prevent a bit more damage.

I've had some chicks hatch. Haven't tried to hatch any LF Langshans yet, but I do have a few in the incubator. Have mainly been working on the bantam blue/black Langshans and the bantam Mille Fleur Cochins. I lost one of my black Langshan bantam hens during a lightning storm. Apparently she spooked off the roost and hit the window in the barn. Things happen. I do have another hen brooding on some eggs so I should have some good birds to choose from later on.

Hi, Mikaela! Glad to hear from you! It is slow going with our breeding pens. We have the outside of one completed except for the door latch. We still need to make the nest boxes, cut the door to remove the eggs from the outside, make the roost, and install the PVC feeders & waterers that we built. Then it is on to the next pen. Hopefully, we will be faster with the next 3 pens.

I've just been using what Forrest had here. Get this! He used those tall cat litter boxes!

I'm in shock as to how much better their condition has gotten since we moved. Nice and heavy, and the feathers look good. No idea if it's the change of feed or the fact they can go outside!

On the bright side, you're getting to build your pens! That's awesome and quite an accomplishment!!!
