Langshan Thread!!!

We have both white and black langshans. They KNOW they look good!! My daughter loves her whites, but my son claims his blacks are better!! I guess we'll find out at the fair in July who is right! Great birds to have and very beautiful to look at. I'm curious, if we house them together...will we get blues?

Best of luck to your kids at fair.

No, you will not get blues. You will get black's that carry the white gene.

My broody Australorp's three eggs hatched this past weekend! They are Langshan/Langshan mixes from my flock at the farm. I am pretty sure that the little black chick is a mix but the other 2 might be pure Langshans.

While Blue is not guaranteed, that is in fact how the blues came about. Whites came from sports of Black, Blue came from Black to White breeding. Mostly you do get Black that carries white but it is possible to get Blue (I did it myself with bantams).

Will that greatly reduce the quality of the white or black stock? Should we just add one white hen with the black pen to control quality? My teenager wants a blue langshan...she has a blue cochin that is beautiful. Or is a blue langshan NOT recognized and therefore NOT showable? Any help would be great...there isn't a lot of info on the blue langshan. Also, do the blacks with a white gene look different than their pure black relatives (like spotted with white feathers, etc) so we could easily separate them? Thanks.

Blue is a recognized color for Langshans but Splash is not.

Crossing the black with white shouldn't mess with the quality. There is no way to tell which carry the gene for white. If you look at my coop page, my bantams are black split to white.

Blue are an accepted color. There are a few on this thread that have them.

What the others said about black to white and not harming the quality is true. If you really want Blue the easiest and quickest way is to go buy one. I'm sure some might cringe but back when I had all three colors I pretty much ignored color (unless specifically wanting a certain color) when setting up my breeding pens, instead focusing solely on type.
