Langshan Thread!!!

Can two blacks have a blue if it's in their background? Just asking because my first chick to hatch today is very very light colored. Others are still pipping and rocking. It's silvery greyish and cream.

Hello fellers! I lucked out and got a whole flock on cl. They came from skyline poultry.

Wow Country Punk!

So is this going to be black or white? I was expecting darker. It's a little lighter in person even.

Has to be White. Especially if lighter than in pic. Since genetics (or at least my knowledge and experience say) rule out Blue or Splash.

Edit: Just in case you or other reading aren't familiar, Recessive White (or Stay White or Silver White) is the silver gene, and chicks that are this genetic make up start smokey gray. They don't turn yellow in the sun or from excessive corn or anything like that. Also appear to be a "brighter" white than the more typical dominant white that comes from yellow chicks.

I'm a bit rusty on my color genetics and variety history but I believe if you breed that bird back to it's parents is when you get the small chance to get blues (something like 5%? Help?) and how that variety came to be in the Langshan originally. I do know that introducing the "silver" gene to the blues is how you get blues that don't "rust" (develop brown coloration in hackles or saddle) and is very desirable.

Well, the chick is definitely smoky silvery. It's sitting on a white envelope in the picture so you can see my phone browned out the color a lot. Wonder if I'll get any more silvers? This one is a very early bloomer and the others are just chilling behind their pips or rocking the egg. They just pipped this afternoon and this little dynmo was out when I woke up at 6:45AM. Does wing sexing work at all on Langshans?

Lisa

I never bothered with the wing sexing because by the time I do my first evaluation they're 8-9 weeks old and I can tell at a glance.  It does require the fast feathering gene which I'm pretty sure Langshans don't have but I could easily be wrong.

Edit:  The hazards of posting at work, I don't get everything in there.  Just to be clear, they're still white even though they have the silver gene.  No such thing as a silver langshan.  Anyway, and again keep in mind my genetics are rusty, but if you got one that means both the black parents must be carriers, which the old Punnett square tells me means 25% of the chicks would be white. 50% of them would be Black but carrying white, and 25% would be Black with no white.  No cosmetic difference in the Black chicks.  Just remember, sometimes Punnett can be a jerk. LOL

Edit 2: Was reading another breed thread and apparently someone in it was getting blue hatch out of all black parent stock.  I do not know how this would be possible.  But it makes me curious, keep us all updated on this little chick?

Edit 3: Because I don't want to double post, just took first step to finally getting Langshans back on the farm here, got some hatching eggs shipped in and none broke so now begins the wait to see if I can get any to hatch!
