Langshan Thread!!!

My two hens are raising two buckeyes and 5 langshan chicks together. They seem like terrific mothers. One of the hens actually puffed up and challenged my horse yesterday. The horse moved. Brave little thing...

Do they adopt them fairly easily?

Or do you put her on eggs and then take the eggs away and put the chicks in under her?
Put her on some fake eggs, take the eggs away and she'll love them in about an hour. I do it during the day most times. The chicks are usually a day or so old. You can do it overnight too if you'd like.

I heard some folks save their egg shells and crush them up to add to feed to add calcium which makes the eggs stronger so they don't break or crush as easily. You can also add some shredded newspaper in with the pine shavings which can make it a little more "cushiony".

I hear that you have to use care to really blend up the shells. If they can tell it's egg shells because larger pieces are present (and they identify them as eggs) you could start some into becoming egg-eaters.

So is it normal for chickens to look this funky at 3 weeks? She is a huge red star and has started getting her ginger feathers up front and neck but looks a big raggedy now. That awkward age? She is getting a tiny comb now.

her primary competitor is the most motherly of Australorps here giving me the evil eye - yeah they wont stay in the cage now no box is tall enough to stop the perching (groan) and I cant bear to add chicken wire because they enjoy it quite a bit seems

Totally normal... They go through some tough looking phases sometimes, kind of like a teenager.

I am new to the Langshan breed and was wondering about combs as they are growing out. Some of my pullets have a curved comb and I wonder if they will straighten out with time as I have heard they are slow maturing. They are about 4 months old now. Also is this a heredity issue?

Curved as in flopped over or? At four months most pullets still have very little development so I wouldn't worry too much.

Sort of like a flop. But the comb is not large enough at this stage to flop like a leghorn. Just slightly curved in the middle. Will try and post a photo when not posting from my phone.
