Langshan Thread!!!

I might have to turn on the incubator? I put all these eggs under this hen on Sept. 24 and Sept. 26. No idea why some are hatching already?? Go figure?
Hatching early is better than not hatching!

So, I'm sicker than a dog that ate a box of chocolates. My day is going to be spent at home moaning and groaning. What's everyone doing today?

Still trying to decide what colors some of these chicks are going to be. They are from my P1 pen (white male, split to white, 2 black pullets that are split to white) and I "think" alot of them are coming out white. Which is exactly what I wanted! They are pretty easy to tell that they are split to white as they have lighter eye color, smaller overall body size and they have slight cushions which were all present in my original white breeding birds. So...we'll see if the F3 generation makes any improvements on the original birds. One can only hope!

So sorry that you are sick! Hopefully you will recover quickly!

As you know, I am new to breeding. We are letting our flock out to forage the fields during the winter and will set up breeding pens after the first of the year. Our white Langshan roo Gandalf is our biggest boy. We only have 1 white hen and she is on the smaller size. Can I put another hen or two of a different color in with them? Would you put only black or blue hens in with the boy and not the white hen to make it easier to keep track of? We kept 1 roo of each color just to keep our options open. (And because I'm not sure what I am doing! LOL) Our best hen is a big black girl that hatched from eggs from you.

That's awesome that you are already planning?! :D

If he has good type and size, absolutely put him over any color you have. That's the awesome thing about recessive white, when two recessive whites are bred together, they produce recessive white birds. (So if you use the white hen, you'll get white chicks.) If you use other colors, such as black, you'll get 100% black birds as long as the hen doesn't carry recessive white. When a white x blue is bred together, the chicks will come out either black or blue.

Just consider the recessive white in a Langshan as though it's a black. Put the white male over that black female from me! (And that's sweet of you to say!) You'll get Black chicks that carry white. Breed the pullets back to the cockerel to get more blacks and whites!

Thank you! I'm sure that I am going to have lots more questions for you when we finally get going. We have 3 breeding pens built. One has our Am Bresse trio in it and the other 2 have our grow outs. I'll be glad when they are integrated into the flocks so we can start actively breeding the Langshans.

Thought I'd share a picture of one of my White pullets. Somewhere around 10-12 weeks old

The two black pullets I'm keeping, roughly four months (Bit long in back but deep chest, they'll go nicely with my White cock bird that doesn't have much of a chest), as you can see I feed them OEGB culls. The Blue trying to sneak into the picture is about 8 or 9 months now I think, don't have any recent photos of her solo.

I love the white BGMatt! I have 8 pullets and haven't picked breeders yet. I have a couple with significant cushions so I guess they will be layers. One thing is certain, they were born in May/June and are all a lot bigger than their mothers. I am surprised at how tall and wide they are. I am hopeful that a couple of them are turning out really nice...crossing fingers.
