Langshan Thread!!!

Two of my new 'B' line chicks at two weeks old. I'm thinking the first one might turn out to be a cockerel. Already holds that little feather stub of a tail right up whenever I approach the brooder. First one to step up and greet while the others huddle toward the back. The second one has a much lighter chick down but feathers are coming in black (and baby white). Don't think it's blue as neither parent is or carries blue to my knowledge but I was hoping The third chick from this test hatch flat out refused to have its picture taken today...unless you count a blur.

#1 Looks to be a pullet, #2 probably a cockerel.

Nice looking birds! Langshans are one of the breeds I most enjoy judging. Their size & stately carriage make them standouts in the showroom.

That's exactly what drew me to this breed. Thanks for putting it into words.

More chick pics. Here are the three B line chicks now at four weeks old. I think I have one cockerel and two pullets based on comb and wattle development but it's too soon to tell yet. I can't believe how tall they are at this age. I am so grateful to Wil Hanley for the cockerel that sired these chicks. He's a stunner.

First picture is the cockerel who just heard the dog and stretched that neck right up, then he dropped it down and hunched his shoulders a bit for the next two photos.





Possible pullets. The one in back is very shy and does NOT like to have her picture taken. She was my blur last time. Head shot -- girls? And photo with can for size.





ETA: Eggs from the Hanley trio are currently on day 15 in the incubator. Can't wait to compare.

I posted some of these on FB but forgot to post them here! These are a few shots of my first official hatch of eggs from my new LF black Langshan trio. I had another group hatch this past weekend and was shocked when 2 splash chicks hatched out of eggs that I thought were from my black trio. I've decided that one of my egg collectors mistakenly put 2 eggs from my BBS Langshans in the carton that was only supposed to have eggs from the black trio! It was a surprise but they are big, fluffy, healthy chicks! Not what a really wanted right now but that's okay. I'll try to get some pics of them this week. I've also learned a lot about hatching eggs from this trio. They are all hatching at least 24 hours after all my Pita Pinta/PP mix eggs. I'm having to adjust how I hatch, I have another group in the incubator and I set the Langshans 24 hours before the other eggs. I'm hoping that it makes a difference and they all hatch around the same time.

I don't post pictures on here much anymore but wanted to share this one. First and so far only large fowl chick hatched (fertility issues on old birds, was waiting on eggs from young birds), he's 6 weeks old in this photo and already near a foot tall (jug pictured with him is exactly 12")

Whoa! What a big boy!!! It will be fun to see what he looks like as he matures!

This is my first Langshan and she is so funny to watch! I just lost one of my bufforph. so I am looking to replace and add to my flock of 4. I think I will purchase three more of the Langshan's. They are very regal.

I have three and they are quite possibly my favorite chickens - ordered some Jersey Giants to compare to them - been thinking of a good cross for them to try - maybe Giants or Australorps but not sure what would be best - anyone tried any good crosses with Langshan breed?
