Langshan Thread!!!

Perfect! I was trying to figure out how to get my birds to stay in a container on my shipping scale. We have a killing cone so just need to get the scale. Maybe my farm friends have one. They have all kinds of things in their workshop and have been raising all kinds of animals for years.

Edited to add, I loved your set up Dirt Farmer! You have beautiful birds, beautiful coops, and a beautiful property!

Thank you. I should mention, in your case, you'll need a really big cone or the long legged cocks can pop out of it.

Edit- I wrote this prior to reading the last couple posts. The cocks were all weighed about two months ago, and all were testing the limits of the set up. They were 8 1/4 to 8 3/4 lbs in a medium cone. I was still able to get an accurate weigh in with some patience.

That thought made me giggle! Our killing cone is a large traffic cone and they use it for turkeys so I think that the boys will fit. I don't know him Lincoln yet but he seems to be a fairly calm cock. Shang is a jumpy youngster still. He is just sure I'm out to get him when I come into the pen with the red treat bucket. I am adjusting my schedule so I can get out to the farm more than once or twice a week. I don't want a pet rooster but I would like it if he and his girls weren't terrified of me. The field Langshans all come running when they see me with the bucket.

What is the difference between a Langshan and a Marans ? I only ask because I have what was reported to be a BCM hen but as I look at your photos, she (by looks) fits the bill of a Langshan! Confused

The Marans has Langshan genetics in its background so sometimes you'll get a BCM that has similarities. The BCM should have some red/copper color on the neck, it has a rectangular body type, whereas the Langshan has the high tail and U shaped back line. The Maran should lay a dark brown egg. The Langshan has a dark eye, whereas the Maran has a reddish eye. There are probably other differences, I don't have a Marans standard. I have both in my layer flock. The ones that are close to their respective proper types and colors are easy to pick out. Those that deviate from their standards start looking alike, especially if the Marans lack neck color.

My hen is the color of a Langshan but has red eyes a very upright tail and lays very dark brown eggs... Almost eggplant color when she starts out after a molt. They dilute out to a light cocoa brown as the season goes on

Likely a Marans, many times they don't get the copper in the hackles or proper type because of bad breeding (too many poor breeders going on egg color alone instead of type). Dirt Farmer covered most the differences.

As far as the weighing conversation, which I'm embarrassed to say I skipped over the original question, I have been known to use crates, weigh them empty, put the bird in, weigh again and subtract crate weight from scale. Comes and hanging scales work great too as was pointed out.

Might read through the description of Marans and Langshans to compare

(just scroll down to the chicken type names)

One of the big obvious things is also the height - Langshans are very tall birds with feathers on their feet. Only thing they could be confused with is maybe black giants which have no feathers on their feet or Brahma's which have feathered feet but don't come in the solid black color that I have ever seen.

I agree, probably a Marans.

I have a friend who breeds black Jersey Giants. She takes the boys out to the farm where my breeder birds and extra Langshans are. We had a black JG running with the black Langshans until processing day. I always had to look for the feathered legs & feet to tell which was which. Now we only have the Langshans left which makes things easier.
