Language problem.. Store or Shop

Hi..

I have a small business that sell lots of thing, start from daily need like rice, flour, sugar, beverage, bottled water, several electric equipment like fitting, lamp holder, fluorescent lamp, several snacks, tobacco and home cleaning need like dish washer liquid.

The problem is I need to give the business name in English. It seems good using mart. For example, if my business name is Mark Tux then the full name will be Mark Tux Mart. But unfortunately I've seen the other business that have the same business like me using 'mart' next to their business name, the other alternative could be shop or store.

Since I'm not native English speaker nor user, I'd like to ask if anyone can help me to determine the right word, shop or store to put next to my little business name?

example: Mark Tux Store or Mark Tux Shop

I don't really know if it matters. I don't think that there's a "right" word to use for something like that, but I may be wrong.
I personally think that Mark Tux Shop sounds the best though.

I think of shop as a tiny store.

If it were my business I would name it store, because it seems like a general store.

To me a shop is a boutique, a toy store, a small shoe store, etc.

I wouldn't think that naming it "shop" would be incorrect, either, though.

(I really am not too opinionated on this.)

the actual name of business is Asia Baru... Mark Tux is for example only.

Then I think of using Asia Baru Shop or Asia Baru Store.

Although speaking Asia Baru word is a bit difficult to speak in English but we already use that name for decades

I do realize the different way of speaking my word of my language in English.

yes, it does sounds better than the store. Although I need to check the right word, store or shop. Since it is bad to use a word before asking the meaning to the native speaker/user cause it will be really embarrassing using wrong word.

If you really want to be en vogue or highfalutin, skip the "mart" "shop" "store" altogether.

Simply "Mark Tux".

A name that does not need definition because it is a name that defines. It sets its own standard.


The "mart", "shop", "store" appendage to me announces class and quality (or lack of) right of the bat. Now, this may not be the reality, and just a perception, but names create perceptions (or illusions) don't they? So, that is part of the game.

Also, you want to pique enough curiosity that one will step into your shop, and enough uniqueness in name that one will remember your shop.

Yet another opinion here... I would call it Asia Baru Market.
A Market is what your little store truly is... allthough in the typical way of the english language.. Market, Store, and Shop can be interchangable to many people. But, a Market is more what it is.. much like a grocery store. A grocery store can be referred to as a store because the word 'grocery' often comes before.. letting people know that is what that store offers.. since almost anything selling things can be called a store. Calling an establishment a shop, is just reffering to shopping.
But, in proper english... a Market is the place you buy food products, beverages, and often other goods are available in the same place. I could say "I'm going to Market" and people from many of the english speaking countries would know what I am talking about. Which I think is important in your case... since most english countries don't share out 'American-isms' ... even our different regions and states will vary in how they refer to a place.

But a Market is a longstanding, old used term most anyone will understand. Mart, is just the shortened version of Market.. but at least if you are using the whole proper word, you sound a bit different.

Uhh.. my post is a little long winded and repetitive over the use of a word... I am just very sleepy. Pretend I had condensed that all into 2 sentences, ok?
