So I have a chicken with bumblefoot and I'm hoping to solve this issue at home, since theres no avian veterinarians near me. I've had some experience with surgical procedures with my hogs and lambs but this was my first attempt at anything with my chickens.

I went ahead and brought her in this evening and after soaking/disinfecting her foot I noticed a black scab on the top AND bottom of her foot. I started on bottom and after a couple minutes came to the conclusion that the kernal goes lengthwise in between two of her toes through the bottom of her foot to the top.

I didnt want to cut an enormous hole in her foot, so I got as much as I could and then bandaged her up.

What Im wondering is...
Has this been in vain? There IS some of the core still in her foot, so is it not going to get better until I get it all out?
I dont want her to suffer, does anyone have any suggestions for pain relief?

Thanks to anyone who can help. I want my baby to feel better but I want to make sure its done right.

this is the only picture I managed to take. the bottom wasnt swollen hardly at all, just had a dime sized black scab on it

I would try to get all of the infection or pus out of the foot. When you have bumblefoot that is on the top of the foot as well as bottom, it can be hard to get it all out. Sometimes I will cut from both sides, squeeze the heck out of it in every direction, and soak it in some betadine, then dress it. Here are some good links to read:

I can't find the link at the moment, but I have seen a video where a vet uses a punch to basically take the infection out of the foot in one clean hole. I have also followed a thread on BYC where the poster tried to remove the infection and managed to make a hole right through her chicken's foot. She was really worried, but it healed no problem (a bit like when we have our ears pierced and then don't put an earring through it for a long time!) If I can find the links I will post them.

I have had a girl who had bumblefoot that was coming through the whole foot - I soaked her feet every night in a solution of tricide neo for 4 months, and one day the black lumps fell out (top and bottom within a few days of each other) , and it was gone. But it took a long time and a lot of dedication! I can't say 100% that it was the tricide neo that worked, but I would try it again if I had another case of bumblefoot.

Here's the link to the thread where the infection fell out and left a hole
