Large Flock Feeder / Feed

You can jury rig a pvc feeder but they won't stop feed raking or theft by rats, mice, and wild birds that also bring in disease, vermin like mites and lice, and larger predators like snakes. A good treadle feeder is going to pay for itself through feed savings in less than six months. Look for a spring loaded door, heavy counterweight, a narrow and distant treadle step, an inward swinging door, and no plastic parts. A soft close door helps with training but the birds will figure out the feeder once they get hungry if you have them cooped up during training.

Almost any feeder will work until you attract the rats, mice, and wild birds. Starting off with a proper treadle feeder prevents the vermin from ever coming around and building up a population. In the wild, food is harder to find and the populations are kept in check. A chicken coop provides a buffet and can support huge populations of vermin unless you have a good treadle feeder
Do a forum search here on BYC.com or on Google for rat proof chicken feeder.

Glad you bumped this! I will look in to a treadle feeder. I still have not figured out a good system. Now the rainy season is here and feeding is more of a pain.

I have tried many many feeders in my short poultry keeping hobby.
Now I feed everything from Quail, chickens, and turkeys from a hanging 5gallon pail.
Nearly no waste well expect for the turkeys but turkeys will find a way to make a mess out of any feeder. They grab a mouth full and then figure wait I have to swallow all this.
I have an article on how to make one in my profile somewhere. Or you can buy this

The Quail I use a Folders coffee container with 3-2” elbows

I have about 30 or 40 hens and 4 roosters " chicken maths", I have one chicken happy trigger feeder in 80 litre bin and 2 treadle feeders 40 kg each, I top them up once a week, the treadle feeders are in a covered area. I have a small treadle feeder "5 Kg" I fill it every other day but that is optional, originally I used that for the new hatches when they are a few weeks old then some hens "fell in love with it" and I don't want to disappoint them, it is in my way when I collect the eggs.
