Large growth under roosters wing...please help!!

try to gently clean it and have some one hold him for you , but you should look very closely at the skin on the swolen area and see if you can find a small puncture mark, that be a spidder bite . here we get spiders that like to over winter in our dog houses , im not sure what kind they are but a few years ago that hapened to one of my dogs. large swollen area/chills/fever/tenderness. if you see a small hole that could be what happend. we just kept it very clean and aplied topical antibiotics to it and it went away

yes and youll need to flush it out every day at least twice....for the first 2 or 3 days use peroxide, then after that cut out the peroxide and continue to use betadine and maybe saline and water....put triple antibiotic ointment or something similar on the stitches...if you see what looks like any kind of infection after you stop the peroxide or if it turns green start the peroxide again for a day or two. also i gave 1/8 of a cc of penicillan for livestock (cattle and pigs i think) in the leg muscle everyday for a week or until it starts clearing up more and you see some improvement
what i just told you to do it EXACTLY what I did for my hen that had her neck half ripped off by a raccoon. I didnt think shed make it, infection being the main thing. I sewed her up, it was probably 50 stitches or so. I left a hole at the top and one at the bottom so i could stick my syringe in the top hole everyday and let it flush out everything and then it would come out the bottom. i cant even tell which hen she is now. the heck of it is, i used a hair from my horses tail to do it. i didnt wanna use regular thread (and i didnt have or know where to get the proper stuff) because it seems to me like it would act more as a foreign matieral and the body may reject it. also i said before, dont be alarmed if it starts turning green, my hen did the same thing, i would just use the peroxide again for a day or so. the peroxide kills some of the skin cells so u dont want to use it all the time so that it has a chance to heal.

I am not sure how to go about lancing it. What should I use to do it? Also, will it hurt him a lot when I cut? What should I use for stitching (type of thread). I want to help but I am afraid I might hurt hum worse. A vet isn't an option and I will do what I need to do to make him better.

Obvious we cant make the decision for you as far as lancing it. Yes it will hurt him, but I dont believe it will hurt like it would hurt us. Also, he will be in more pain if he doesnt get better. The best thing, right now, that you can do is post a picture of it. Then we'll have a better idea of what were dealing with and can give you better advice. What does it feel like? Squishy? Liquidy? Firm, but can be smooshed? hard as a rock? What does it feel like is in there?
Also when/if you do this, put a towel over his head and he wont move, its almost like it puts them out. Ive heard of hanging a chicken upside down and making it pass out. Its never worked for me, but you'll have to look it up, its pretty neat and from what I understand it is harmless to the chicken.

ill check on your progress first thing tomorrow.....i would wait anyways till tomorrow to see how he seems...how long has he been this way? if hes the same and you have intent to remove this thing or at least try to drain it then i would stop the antibiotics tomorrow so that the next day (monday) you can start him on the penacillan injection

I had sprayed the area with blu-kote a few days ago thinking it was a scrape or something so thats why the feathers are blue.

how is he today? has it gone down any? is it any softer? could it be a warble worm? spide bite? i think its gotta be some kind of poisonous bite.

carolina chicky,

Hope your chicken does OK. I don't have anything else to add except that you can give aspirin for pain. I've attached info.

Good luck

ASPIRIN SOLUTION

Used as a general treatment for reducing distress conditions of birds (fever or listlessness) that accompanies many diseases.

Dissolve five (5 grain) aspirin tablets in one gallon of water.

Offer this solution free-choice to the birds for the duration of an illness. The solution aspirin equivalent to 25 grains/gallon or 324 mg/gallon of drinking water. The dosage rate is about 25 mg/lb body weight per day.

He is doing much much better today. The knot has gone down a little and is not nearly as red. I checked him again and after dusting him yesterday for mites I don't see any more mites on him. He is walking normal again and hasn't fallen over on his side like he was doing. I took him out in the sunshine for a little while this morning and he tried to fight with another rooster through the fence so he must be feeling better, lol. I gave him another baby aspirin with an egg and some yogurt this morning. I suppose I will continue his antibiotics for a week or so. I went out and looked and saw a spider web in his coop so a spider bite is possible.
