Large irregular air sac?????? Help!!!!!!! Would like peoples thoughts on this.

Think on that hatching link there are some stories and pictures of chicks with this and what people did. Have you seen them? If it is not real big or is not dragging I would just leave the chick in the incubator alone and leave the humidity at the 70 or so you have it. Do you have the other two chicks out of there, I would take them out. Try to keep him quiet, make sure it is really dark and quiet where the incubator is. If it is a little bigger and he is not running around, you can try to wrap his hind end and keep him quiet in a little jar or cup, I have used those little jam jars before, or have seen pics of people using small glasses or little plastic tubs to set the chicks in.

SMALL TUPPERWARE CONTAINER. Not much bigger then the egg he came out of. I put a clean paper towel on the bottom. That is how I have saved the ones with unfinished sacks. You want that baby resting without a whole lot of room to flail. Running or moving around too much can cause the sack to rupture or worse, pull his intestines out. Had it happen once. Not pretty.

Hmmmm, I have him wrapped up pretty tight so he can't move. The container is a good idea. I think I might go look for one. So after they finish absorbing the yolk does that fall off or is the chick suppose to suck everything in? I think the container might help because, keeping him settled is hard all three are chatter bugs. I can't take the other two down to the coop until the morning because, I have to move to bigger chickens out and unfortunately the coop I planed to move them in temporarily the door came loose. So I have to get my hubby to fix it in the morning. I am not sure the guy I had build that little coop did a very good job.

I have read here ppl hatch them fine (I never see much in my eggs as they are always tan or blue )but keep the egg upright for incubation and hatch. air cell at the top of big end


Whoops reread your post..... Day 17 and taking up only 1/2 the egg?
Doesnt sound good. If it was just a wonkey air cell that's diff. If it takes up that much of the egg they may have quit already
Usually they will take up over 3/4 of the egg by this time Finish them to day 21 -22 and see
Its all you can do.

They should give you an idea of where the head/beak is? Think the problem with most of the malpositions is there is really nothing you can do since you can't get the head/beak to where it can get air..

Unfortunately it seems you are reaching the point of doing something even if it is wrong. If they were mine I would pip the shell/membrane for them where ever it looks like the beak/head should be, especially if they have tried to zip internally. Prop the egg so that part is uppermost. Leave the membranes with veins alone as best you can, if they manage to slow down the veins enough then try to help them out, very slowly. You may very well kill them, but it doesn't sound like they will be able to hatch on their own, and leaving them be means they will just die anyhow.

With the way oversize air cells the chicks just don't have room to develop as they need to, and they can't move around enough to get rid of the veins and in position, and the hatch time frame goes wrong, and they have no energy reserves to fight with, they just have a lot of strikes against them. Shipped eggs seem to start with a couple of strikes against them anyhow.

Have you checked your incubator temps independently? I still think there is something going on there with the temp.

Things are looking good. I saved two of them and we have one left that is iffy. Honestly I hope they all make it but, if I can't pull the last one through this is a better result then I ever expected. I know if I hadn't intervened I would have three dead chicks already ready and I have two alive and strong and one fighting. Thanks for all the help. I will keep you updated on baby number 3.

I just wanted to say thank you. I did have the baby wrapped in a damp napkin and wrap up as best as possible with a napkin to keep him from getting out. I didn't know how long that would last but, at the moment couldn't think of something better to do. I just wanted to let ya'll know that your container idea is absolutely wonderful. I don't know if the baby will survive or not but, if there is a chance this will definitely help to get him or her there. The other babies are not distracting her or him as much. So the babies is able to stay a lot more calm and is resting comfortably and is no longer trying to escape. So I am guessing probably only the next day or so will tell us how things go. I will update ya'll on little Miracles progress.

The other two will be going down to the brooder in the coop tomorrow.

I hope he pulls through! I have never lost one to mushy chick but I never consider the battle won until several days after the chick finishes the yolk. Never give up hope!

K I will give you some chicks in the end.

I just don't want to mess with him anymore then I have to for now in the hopes he will pull through. I will definitely gets you pics of all the remaining babies in the end. I sure hope he pulls through too. So what is mushy chick???? Is that what they call a baby will a yolk not fully absorbed???

The opening where they are absorbing that yolk can be a doorway for bacteria. Sometimes bacteria gets in and in 2-3 days kills them. I am throughout about sanitizing between hatches and have never had this happen, but it is always possible.
