Large rooster killed hen

He is, as best I can tell, is now 9 months. The hens are a mixed bag of ages, from 6 months to just over 1 year. I know my Rhode Island Red rooster is very dominate over the LO. The rooster are the same age, even came from the same person. Red is just fine with the ladies.

It could be he's trying to steal girls from the other roo, and standing on them longer than needed to mate as he's trying to dominate them not just mate them.

Sounds like what I have observed in the past. I just don't want to have to segregate him completely. At this point, he is penned by himself. And he needs a very aggressive, smaller hen or a mate he won't suffocate.

Sometimes it's hard to know what's going on with multiple males on the scene.
If you really want to use him, it will take time and observance to know if he's a keeper or not.
He's young yet...would be best to keep the boys separated for now at least.

I let everyone out today. Not a good result. Levi pinned 2 of the smaller hens down. He was defintely trying to dominate them. My Cuckoo Marans hen beats his tail feathers, so he doesn't mess with her. Going to keep him separated from the flock for now.
