I have a chick that has hatched on day 24 and it has a large "sack" like thing between its legs and tail area. Is this normal? It was slow to hatch about 24 hours.

Thank you!

Is it the yolk sac?

I have no clue, none of the other chicks had this. It sorta looks like a fat swollen tick where its umbilical cord was.

Keep it separate from the others so they won't peck it and give it time to dry. It's either a piece of the cord, or the poor little thing herniated itself.

If it is a hernia will it heal?

I'm sorry, but that's typically fatal. If it's still alive it was a piece of the cord and it should be dried up by now.

I had 2 chicks hatch late with similar symptoms and they both died the next day. It was very sad -- the kids had already given them names.

It is still alive. Its drinking and eating with the rest. The sack is still there and has not shrunk. I hope that we dont loose it. This is my first hatch and I only got 11 out of 22 but so far we found 3 infertile eggs, I death during hatch, and the rest are still in the bator (day 25)
