Large wound in my hen's side, what should I do????

This just recently happened to my chicken and we brought her to the vet and he suggested that we use scarlet red oil mostly known as red-kot he said that it works really well... I have read people use blue-kot but my vet said that he has never been impressed with it ... Hope she heals well!

I had the same issue with my Cuckoo Marans hen - my Roo's favorite mate. At the same time I noticed some wear on the backs of my Laced Wyandotte and one of my easter eggers. First I separated my Roo (a beautiful and otherwise sweet Brahma) and clipped and filed his toenails and spurs. Then I purchased hen saddles ( http://www.louisescountrycloset.com/hen-saddles, or http://www.hensaver.com ) for the girls that were beginning to show signs of wear (broken feathers, bare patches). They do very well with these saddles and the saddles work great! Finally, I brought my Cuckoo Marans in and put her in the kitchen sink. Washed the wound thoroughly with warm soapy water, gentle spray. Dried her, then poured peroxide into the open wound. Dried her again, then put neosporin (without anesthetic) into the wound. To hold the wound together so that it can heal, I cut the sleeve off an old men's T-shirt, slip the sleeve over her torso, gently pulling her wings to the outside so they can move freely. This works like an ace bandage holding the wound together and keeping it clean. This way she can stay with the flock while she heals - less stress. Key though, is keeping the Roo away to give her time to heal. I have an enclosed paddock, so I keep the girls inside while the Roo patrols the outside perimeter. He can still see and protect them, but can't get to them. I realize most people don't have this situation, so keeping her in a "hospital" cage for a week or so may be the best bet.
