Large wound on side of hen (graphic images)- help!

Yes, for a wound that large, you want to keep her inside where flies can't get into the wound and so that others won't pick at it.

A large dog kennel works.
I've seen some folks use baby play pens (I assume it was an old one they still had around after thier kids grew up) or puppy play pens, something like that.
Do you have a garage or were you going to keep her in the house? I will tell you puppy pads are great to use especially if in the house. I RARELY have a chicken or chicks in the house, So Dusty! but puppy pads are an easy way to clean up after them and they don't make a scattered mess like shavings.
If in the garage, then throw down a tarp and you can use a little pine shavings or the puppy pads.
Hope that helps.

Oh, or on the cheap, except for maybe tape...you can build a cardboard corral. If you have something like a Dollar General nearby, usually they have large boxes that paper towels or tp comes in. Ask if you can go around and dig some large boxes out of their recycle. Mine doesn't mind at all. Tape the boxes together to make her a cardboard corral. I've done that with chicks, worked just fine, then once you're done...they can be broken down and disposed of.

Ok we sprayed it with chlorhexidine. It looks like her body is already forming new connective tissue! She's not letting me do much (i don't blame her). I pulled a few feathers out that were sticking on the wound.

Thank you so much! We have her in a large dog crate but I think we may need to move her to the garage. I like the idea of the cardboard corral!

We kept ours in a good-sized dog crate on puppy pads in the living room; it wasn't dusty at all and she didn't mind. We changed the pads when we took her out for treatment twice a day.
