Larkwell Valley (2023)

It always amazes me how different mallard and scovy nails are, even at such a young age. Turtle and Potato are the same age, and while Potato slices me open without really trying, Turtle tried her hardest lol and just did some raised lines.

She looked good last night with the group, I went ahead and turned the lamp on just in case and because it was rather cold last night compared to how it's been

They're called TALONS for a reason! :D

Glad Turtle is doing better. What an odd thing to have happen.

It's the 3rd time I've had a duck just flip over this year. First was the little call that I mentioned earlier, and a few weeks ago, my blue runner male was having horrible balance issues. He got better while I was at work, but I think he was having an airsack or crop problem. If I held him upright, he would get better, but as soon as he fell over, his crop would get huge and he wouldn't have balance again. Kept him in a bucket when I left and by the time I got home, he was out amd acting like nothing had ever happened.

Pretty boy. Looks kinda like mine. ;)

The one thing I'm not crazy about the SOP for Calls is that they want a shorter bill that makes it impossible for them to hatch naturally. That's not sustainable.

Are you going to incubate, or let them hatch out their own?

Probably both, but preferably hatch out their own.

Honestly though I think it will be more that I give broody calls eggs from other pens and just incubate my calls myself. I won't be hatching many and will almost certainly just process the males, so I probably won't have very many. Likely just 22-44 tops each season if I only incubate
