Hello everyone, today when collecting eggs I found a small lash egg (probably about an inch in diameter). Not sure what to do about this, we’ve lost 2 chickens in the past month or two mysteriously (they just disappeared we thought it was a predator, none have gone missing since) could they have just wandered off to die if they had salpingitis?

But the thing is, no chickens are sick or looking ill at all so how do I know which one laid it?

Also is this contagious? We have new chicks coming next weekend and don’t want to integrate them with the flock after 2 months if the flock is infected.

Sorry this post got so long, just worried about my flock.

Salpingitis a.k.a. Lash Egg is an inflammation of the oviduct. More info about causes are in the links below.

Most of the time it's not contagious, but if you do have certain diseases within your flock, then the condition may be seen in more than one bird.

IF you can figure out which hen expelled the Lash Material, then you can try treating her with an antibiotic. If caught early it may be helpful.

Lash egg is not contagious, however, the reason for the lash egg could be contagious. I put my lash egger on a broad-spectrum antibiotic. I used oxytetracycline, for 10-days. You can use Tylan/Tylosin as well, however, I have had more success with oxytetracycline.

I had to come look this up so I've had a Leghorn who has not laid an egg for like over a month mind you she just started laying a couple months ago, I've been feeling her abdomen really really hard so I decided to cull her, I did some investigating and it was a huge huge lash egg the size of two fists stuck inside her overduct or connected to it... Where she was showing that she wasn't sick at all but I think she was sick earlier on with a cold as I treated them all with antibiotics months ago

I found a lash egg in the coop today. Don't know who laid it. Should I be worried about the eggs my other hens are laying? I just gave a dozen of this week's eggs to a dear friend and I'd hate for her to get sick or something.

No, you don’t need to worry about giving away eggs from your hens if one has salpingitis. They are fine. I would encourage you to read some of the articles that are linked in post 3 about lash eggs. Salpingitis is a common finding in older hens. Many times we won’t even know one has it until after one dies, and we may find lash material inside the abdomen after butchering or doing a necropsy.
