Last 3 days in incubator for newbie

Does it HAVE to be the blue Dawn? I have the orange one.

It's supposed to be the blue Dawn, it's animal safe. The others have stuff added that I don't know how safe it is for animals.

First chick is out. Has a couple Of small pieces of shell stuck to it. Maybe they will come off as she dries. (Using she in hopes that is what she is.

She has a piece of shell about the size of a dime on her back, but not over her wings.

The piece of shell came off and I tried to wash off any membrane on her feathers with warm water. She seemed to have plenty of strength. She doesn't seem to have a lot of feathers. How long does it take them to dry off? But she is back in the bater and I hear her chirping. Gonna say a little prayer for her.

I am also a first time mom, congrats! It took mine 6-12 hours to fluff up nicely, I am assuming because of all of the humidity.

I will remember that next time AmyLynn. They took a long time to fluff, especially since the humidity shot way up while hatching.

Out of curiosity, do any of you let your hens hatch eggs? I have a white silkie and a Salmon Faverolle sitting on silkie eggs because my incubator was full. Assuming they hatch them, do I take them away from mom and the surrogate mom once they start moving around? To explain, the Faverolle went broody and has no rooster so I gave her some fertile eggs.

I just started my flock last fall, they just started laying a couple weeks ago, so no one has gone broody yet, and I really don't want anyone to. lol I have no interest yet in having broody hens. I'd rather do the incubating myself where I can meddle more....lol

Mine was determined to keep her eggs and since my incubator was full I decided to let them try.

Well I came home at lunch today and notice two of my eggs has a few small chips on them. But nothing else. Maybe they will all get going tonight. I won't mind staying up all night watching them. Haha

Update: a lot of my eggs have cracks on them and one is wobbling. I am so excited. Working in IT has it's perks I have my eggs on ustream at http://ustre.am/1nDDN if anyone wants to see how it's going.
