This poster is actually quite right in mentioning prophylactic antibiotics for birds with viral infections. ESPECIALLY for birds that are having concurrent respiratory signs that may point to wet pox. The rate of secondary bacterial infections is quite high with many viral infections. When a viral infection is diagnosed, antibiotics are given quite frequently before signs of bacterial infection, to prevent otherwise vulnerable tissues from becoming infected. Certain viruses have a higher incidence of concurrent bacterial infections than others.

I am not one to jump to using antibiotic with the dry form of pox, because it usually leaves the animal quite benign on its own in a couple of weeks, but concurrent respiratory signs would be an indication for antibiotic therapy. Whether or not they should be used and the types of antibiotics indicated is a different story.

A true statement confirmed in the culture report. Macrolides are recommended for sensitivity against particularly resistant strains of bacteria. Adios.

The one thing about these charts is they don't reveal where some diseases may be susceptible to an antibiotic in vitro, that doesn't always predict clinical effectiveness. The E. coli strain I dealt with showed resistance to enrofloxacin even in vitro. The same was listed in regard to Trimethoprim-Sulfa, Amoxicillin/Clav Acid, Doxycycline.
I know, I just use it as a guide.
