Lavender Ameraucana Breeders .... UNITE

Wasn't it Jean that said cuckoos will never be approved in Ameraucanas because we'll never be able to get the leg colour right?. Something about the barring gene that conflicts with the leg colour we require or something to that effect? (I'm going from memory .... )

wonder if they would be white

Well, as wildly unlikely as they may be, several people have committed to this project which is also several generations in. In the meantime, solid birds from this project ARE BEING USED TO IMPROVE OUR LAVENDERS.

I agree, the quality of the lavender's I've gotten through the project are great. Feather texture is better, color is a little lighter. I like the idea of a overall project thread, thank you for creating it chickenstalker. I apologize for mentioning the cuckoo pattern birds, didn't mean to cause problems or go off topic

as to lavender - which started as a project too, can someone give a quick summary of what birds and colors were used to start this color variation of Ameraucana?

My understanding is the Lavender was introduced from an EE.

Maybe Mr. Shaffer will jump in with that info. I think he posted on a thread that was how he introduced it. Lavenders are still a project and not yet APA accepted.

Why is there so much resistance regarding the lavender color as a standard? I know there was some issue with the name - that technically it should be self blue as the color, but I never have understood why there was such a to do about accepting a new color as part of the standard.

Its still a disagreement about the name, and also I think we have to have a qualifying meet with LOTS of very good birds. Not as easy to do as it may sound. I am not exactly versed in show etiquette though, so maybe somebody with more experience there will fill us in.

I am not opposed to going a little off topic. Sometimes its how new ideas get brought in.

I don't remember the exact specifics but I think you have to have something like a minimum of 5 breeders working on them for a specific minimum number of years and the numbers have to be out there being shown. A standard has to be written for the bird and then a qualifying meet held with a fairly substantial number of birds required at that. The APA/ABA obviously wants to attempt to make sure the variety is consistent and capable of reproducing itself reasonably before admitting it to the Standard.

It's definitely going to be awhile before I'll get any out to the shows because I will be working with all splits next year and from those, I will then have to figure out which ones will even produce lavender for me. My pure lavender birds (2 pullets) are nice but very small. I have a very large black cock bird to use with them so I am excited for the future.

From conversations with John Blehm I was told in bantams he used lav old english x black ameraucana and lav D'anvers x black ameraucana. He then crossed the 2 lines. If I remember corectly he used the bantam on large fowl to start the large fowl line. The large fowl I got from him needed more size.Harry used EE as I recall.Others may be able to tell you more.
